After two days of heavy rain beating the red clay,
Saint Patrick's Day
dawned clear to make way for a beautiful afternoon of
racing at
Friendship
Speedway. Concern over the rain-damaged track
resulted in some minor
modifications in the regular race program but did not
stop the action.
The Semi-Modified 4 feature had Steve Faw grabbing an
early lead which
he
maintained until lap 6, when Jamie Holcomb slipped
underneath to take
the
lead. Holcomb, in the Donald's Automotive - Super
Suds Car Wash
Mustang,
went on to take his second win in as many weeks.
Derrick Mathis
overcame
an early problem and came from the rear to finish
third behind Faw.
Matthew
Warden and Rob Adkins rounded out the top five.
Terry Zachary celebrated his birthday in high fashion
by winning his
Heat
Race, sitting on the pole and leading the Sportsman
feature flag to
flag, in
the Matthews Brother's Grading sponsored machine.
Daniel Moss and
Ralph
Bates kept Zachary alert as they challenged throughout
the feature to
finish
second and third. Joel Bray was fourth with the 2000
Pure Stock
Champion,
John Stamper, finishing fifth in his first season in
the Sportsman
division.
Late Model contenders started out fierce, with the
first laps of this
feature showing strong competition among several top
drivers. 2000 Late
Model champion, Noel Tucker drove his T & T Home
Improvements, Aunt
Bea's
Barbecue, 4D Electric Pontiac, to his first win of the
new season.
Gary
East had a strong second place finish, with Keith
Holder in third, Chad
Paxton in fourth and Kevin Gwynn taking fifth.
Bryan Nance in his Junction - Ad Amusements Pontiac,
challenged early
by
Tommy Zachary, came away with his second Limited Late
Model win of the
season. Problems with Zachary's car allowed Jimmy
Watson and Jerry
Farley to
take second and third place finishes. Tony Lowe
finished out the top
five
behind Zachary.
In the afternoon's final feature, Pure Stock driver,
Marty Billings,
starting from outside the front row in his Danny's
Automotive -
Cornerstone
Exteriors Camaro, became the third two timer winner of
the season.
Jimmy
Grimes captured second followed by Robert Marion in
third, Greg Porter
in
fourth and Andy Mathis finishing out the top five.
Friendship action will get under way again Saturday
afternoon with the
gates opening at 12:00 PM and racing at 2:00 PM. Fans
are reminded
that
this schedule will continue through the month of March
with the regular
Saturday evening schedule resuming in April. The
Carolina Clash Series
will
be at Friendship on April 14 featuring the Super Late
Models.
