“Summer Slam 2002” This Saturday Night at Columbus Speedway
COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI-The Columbus Speedway Weekly Racing Series will be back in action and highlighted this Saturday night August 3rd with the Columbus Nissan Street Stock “Summer Slam 2002” presented by Roy’s Kitchen and Catering. The Full Racing Program will have all divisions also in action including the Super Late Models and all other exciting local divisions.
The Columbus Speedway Street Stock division is producing splendid racing week in and week out on the high banked speed bowl as the evenly matched cars and talented drivers often battle three and four wide during their main event. A record number of entrants are expected for what is possibly the biggest Street Stock race ever held at the famed oval. Participant numbers have swelled as of late in the popular division with over 30 cars entered for each of the last three events not to mention an average of 27 entrants per event during the 2002 season. A stellar field of the region’s top Street Stock competitors will be vying for a starting position in the 24-car main event starting field and battling for the record $1,000 first place prize from the hefty championship purse.
The Street Stock drivers will employ the Columbus Speedway Championship event format which includes single lap Pole Qualifying, B-Mains, driver introductions, and a 20-lap A-Main Event to be run early in the program. The format will have a slight departure from normal Championship procedures as the fastest qualifier will have to draw for a field inversion (0, 4, 6, or 8) adding drama to the equation, much like the Super Late Model division procedures on Weekly Racing Series events.
The region’s top Street Stock chauffeurs are expected to be competing including current point’s leader Lee Ray of Columbus and Ethelsville’s Scott Stripling who trails Ray by a mere 6 points for the title crown. Other notable entries projected include 2002 Columbus Speedway Main Event winners such as Danny Gable, Harold Trimm, Chad Nickoles, David Honeycutt, and Jonathan Edwards. Other drivers anticipated to challenge for the podium finishes include Wallace “Hollywood” Richardson, Marvin Beard, TK King, Jimmy Rogers, Richard West, Terry Kelly, plus many more. The “Summer Slam” event for the Street Stock division during the 2001 season had 36 entrants on hand for the memorable affair that drew an exceptional crowd on hand to witness the thrilling race. The competition has since improved immensely in the “fan favorite” division during the 2002 season and “Summer Slam 2002” has grand potential to be a “barn burner.”
All other Columbus Speedway divisions will be in action as well including the high flying Super Late Models plus the Mississippi Modifieds, Pro Streets, Mini Stocks, Cruisers, and Pro 4 class. A strong field is expected to be on hand after a well deserved mid summer break in the racing activities.
Event information includes grandstand gates open at 5pm with practice at 7:30pm; and racing at 8pm. Adult admission is only $10 with children 10 and under admitted free. Coolers and lawn chairs are welcome.
