THE ROAD TO THE UDTRA CHAMPIONSHIP GOES THROUGH ATOMIC MOTOR SPEEDWAY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
KNOXVILLE, TN - With just three races left in the 2001 United Dirt Track
Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series season, the road to the championship
will lead through Atomic Motor Speedway this Tuesday night for a 50-lap
$10,000-to-win main event. Three drivers are still in the running for the
title with just 164 points separating them.
Rick Eckert of York, PA leads Steve Francis of Ashland, KY by only 35
points going into Tuesday'' event on the World's Fastest 1/3-mile
high-banked clay oval. The defending and four-time UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series
Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN is in the third spot, and trying
to keep his "Drive for Five" alive.
Bloomquist won the last UDTRA event at Atomic Motor Speedway on September
2, and has four total UDTRA wins there. In the September 2 event,
Bloomquist battled with Eckert for the win. Eckert won his first-ever UDTRA
victory at Atomic Motor Speedway in 1999. Eckert has six UDTRA victories
Francis has a victory in a non-sanctioned event at Atomic Motor Speedway
his resume, and he has one UDTRA victory this season. Francis has kept
the championship hunt this season with consistency. In 40 UDTRA starts
season, Francis has 37 top ten finishes.
Other top UDTRA drivers expected Tuesday that have posted series wins at
Atomic Motor Speedway include Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR with two,
Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC, Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI, Marshall Green,
Dalton, GA, Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN, Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN,
1999 UDTRA Champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA, and 1997 UDTRA Champion
Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR.
Moyer is fresh off a UDTRA win on Saturday night in Glencoe, AL, and he
looking forward to returning to Atomic Motor Speedway on Tuesday night,
he will be bringing his teammate, Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL with him.
"It's been awhile since I've raced at Atomic, and I've heard they've
changed the place since the last time I was there and it's more racy now,"
Moyer said. "A lot of guys have raced there many times since the changes
were made, so I'm looking forward to getting there and getting it figured
Other top UDTRA regulars that will be at Atomic Motor Speedway this Tuesday
night include the 1996 UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN, Jimmy
Mars of Elk Mound, WI, UDTRA Rookie of the Year point leader Joe Izzo of
Chicago, IL, Randy Korte of Highland, IL, Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine,
Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC, and Bill Reed of Knoxville, TN.
Along with the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series, the Atomic Motor Speedway Late
Model Division will also be in action on Tuesday night. The pit gate opens
at 3 p.m., with the grandstand gate opening at 5 p.m. Hot laps are set
7:15 p.m., and time trials are scheduled for 8 p.m.
