Woodhull Raceway cancels Sunday's season finale
WOODHULL, N.Y. (Sept. 14) - In the wake of terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington D.C., the Woodhull, N.Y., Raceway has canceled its scheduled National Modified Series event this Sunday, Sept. 16.
After much thought and consideration to all of the parties involved, Woodhull owners and promoters Amy and Scott Drake decided to cancel their lone remaining show of the 2001 season.
In addition to the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds, the Woodhull finale was to feature the final leg of the Black Rock/Woodhull Fall Challenge for the super stocks and extra distance races for both the street and mini-stocks.
Memorial services are scheduled across the country on Sunday and the Drakes decided to forego the event in respect for those who died in the destruction of the World Trade Center towers in New York and at the Pentagon in Washington.
"It is a tough situation. On one hand, you have the race teams, event sponsors and fans who are looking forward to this big show. This race track is our livelihood and we want to race as badly as everyone else," Drake said. "However, when you put things in perspective, it is only one race, not a whole season. In light of everything that has happened over the past few days, we feel it is in everyone's best interest to spend the day the same way that millions of other Americans will, showing respect for those who paid the ultimate price as well as for the surviving family members who grieve."
