UDTRA NOTEBOOK: SERIES READY FOR MIDWEST TOUR; KENTUCKY EVENT ADDED;
ALABAMA FORMAT CHANGE; STATS UPDATE; HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

WOODSTOCK, GA - With the United Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar
Series taking a two week break, there is still plenty of news to report
The top dirt late model drivers in the nation are ready to begin a Midwest
Tour, a new event has been added to the schedule, the Glencoe, AL event
a format change, and the first inductees to the Dirt Late Model Hall of
have been announced.
UDTRA MIDWEST TOUR BEGINS JUNE 19: The 3rd Annual UDTRA Midwest Tour begins
June 19 in Davenport, IA, then stops in New Richmond, WI, Shawano, WI, two
shows in North Vernon, IN, then it's a swing through Ohio with events in
Clairsville, OH, Conneaut, OH, and winding up on July 7 in Orrville, OH.
Davenport Speedway will host the opener for the UDTRA Midwest Tour on June
19. Rick Eckert of York, PA holds a 139-point lead over Steve Francis of
Ashland, KY. Francis is the defending Davenport UDTRA winner.
The defending and four-time UDTRA Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg,
TN is third in points, fresh off his Battle of Bristol win in Bristol, TN.
Bloomquist is 255 points behind Francis.
Point positions fourth through tenth are tight with just 135 points
separating them. The 1997 UDTRA Champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR
still a 2001 championship contender, moving back up to the fourth spot,
points behind Bloomquist. Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR is still fifth,
34 points behind Moyer.
The 1998 UDTRA Davenport winner Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI is sixth
points, just six points out of the top five. Schlieper started in the 12th
and final row at the Battle of Bristol and charged his way up to a
seventh-place finish in the 60-lap main event.
A couple of top five finishes at Bristol moved the 1999 UDTRA Dale McDowell
of Rossville, GA up to the seventh spot in the points chase, 17 points
behind Schlieper. Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI picked up a win in Bristol,
TN, and is eighth in points, 13 points behind McDowell.
The 1996 UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN is ninth in points
having a pair second-place finishes in Bristol. Smith has three top five
and four top ten finishes in his last five UDTRA events, and is 15 points
behind Mars. Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC is tenth in points, 30 points behind
Other top UDTRA entries expected for the 50-lap $10,000-to-win Davenport,
Midwest tour opener include 1999 winner Rick Aukland of Zanesville, OH,
Steve Boley of West Liberty, IA, Joe Izzo of LaSalle, IL, Shannon Babb of
Decatur, IL, and Randy Korte of Highland, IL.
On June 23, the action moves to Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI
the $20,000-to-win 3rd Annual Masters 100. This is "The Run For The Wrap"
with the winner receiving the prestigious one-of-a kind black leather
jacket. The only two drivers to own one are 1999 winner Wallace, and the
defending champion Aukland, who has two UDTRA Cedar Lake wins.
A format change will see the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series competing in a one-day
show, but the Ohio-based STARS Series will run a preliminary event on June
22. That will bring the UDTRA regulars some tough competition from Chub
Frank of Sugar Grove, PA, Mike Balzano of Parkersburg, WV, and "The
Million-Dollar Man" Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH.
Frank has won two UDTRA events this season, and Balzano has one. Moran
several UDTRA wins on his resume, including one at Cedar Lake. Other past
UDTRA winners at Cedar Lake Speedway includes Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN,
Bloomquist, Davey Johnson of Greensburg, PA, and Schlieper.
Mars could be a force to be dealt with at Cedar Lake, as he returns to his
home track with two UDTRA wins in his pocket this season. Lance Mathees
Winona, MN is another hometown favorite with a helmet full of UDTRA
The next stop on the UDTRA Midwest Tour will its first-ever visit to Shawano
Speedway in Shawano, WI for a 50-lap $10,000-to-win event on June 25. Then
it's on to another first-ever visit for the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series at
Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, IN on June 29-30.
There will be two complete shows in North Vernon, IN. The June 29 show
feature a 50-lap $10,000-to-win main event, and the finale on June 30 will
be a 75-lap $15,000-to-win feature race.
The UDTRA Ohio swing begins on July 3 with another first-time venue at
Cannonball Motor Speedway in St. Clairsville, OH for a 50-lap $10,000-to-win
main event. Then it's on to Raceway 7 in Conneaut, OH for a two-day 100-lap
The UDTRA Buckeye State visit wraps up at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville,
OH with a 50-lap $10,000-to-win main event on July 7. "The Shoestring
Traveler" Frank was UDTRA's "Mr. Ohio" last season taking both races at
Raceway 7 and Wayne County Speedway.
PADUCAH INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY RETURNS TO THE UDTRA SCHEDULE: A 50-lap
$10,000-to-win event at Paducah International Raceway in Paducah, KY on
August 14 has been added to the 2001 UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series schedule.
PIR returns to the UDTRA schedule after a two-year absence. Former UDTRA
winners at Paducah are 1997 UDTRA Champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR
(1999), 1999 UDTRA Champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA (1998), and Skip
Arp of Georgetown, TN (1997).
GREEN VALLEY SPEEDWAY TO RUN TWO COMPLETE SHOWS IN SEPTEMBER: Officials
Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, AL have decided to give UDTRA Pro DirtCar
Series fans more bang for their buck, switching from a two-day 100-lap
$20,000-to-win show to two complete shows on September 28 and 29.
Green Valley Speedway will host a 40-lap $7,000-to-win main event on
September 28, and a 50-lap $10,000-to-win main event on September 29. The
defending and four-time UDTRA Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN
won the only past appearance for UDTRA in 1994.
UDTRA STATS UPDATE: With 20 races in the books for the 2001 UDTRA Pro
DirtCar Series season, here are the latest statistics that are kept track
for UDTRA drivers and manufacturers.
Defending Champion Rocket Chassis leads the 2001 UDTRA Chassis Builders
Challenge with 107 points followed by GRT Race Cars with 85 points.
Mastersbilt Race Cars and Warrior Race Cars are tied for third spot with
points, and Larry Shaw Race Cars is fifth with 61 points.
Cornett Racing Engines leads the JE Pistons Engine Builders Challenge with
97 points followed by Pro Power Racing Engines with 78 points, defending
champion Custom Racing Engines with 75 points, Russell Baker Racing Engines
with 63 points, Hatfield Racing Engines with 54 points, and Malcuit Racing
Engines with 50 points.
Chassis and Engine Manufacturers points are awarded by the top finishes
UDTRA main events on a 6,5,4,3,2,1 basis.
Defending and four-time UDTRA Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN
leads the fast qualifier list with three. UDTRA point leader Rick Eckert
York, PA, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY, and Steve Boley of West Liberty,
each have two fast times, and ten drivers have one apiece.
Fast qualifiers are automatically entered for the Isky Dash as a part of
12th Annual UDTRA Shootout at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA on October
Eckert is still the only driver this season in UDTRA competition to complete
every possible lap of competition. There have been 1,010 laps of
competition in the first 20 UDTRA events. Steve Francis is second on the
Laps Completed list with 979 followed by Bloomquist with 921 completed.
Eckert also leads the JE Pistons Hard Charger point standings with 99
followed by 1999 UDTRA Champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA with 89.
Former UDTRA Hard Charger Award winner Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC is third
with 65 points.
Hard Charger points are awarded at each UDTRA event with one point for each
position a driver improves from the start of the race to the end of the

paced the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series field for 188 laps. Wendell Wallace
Batesville, AR is second with 139 laps led, and Chub Frank of Sugar Grove,

DIRT LATE MODEL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED: The first 15 inductees
the new Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame have been announced with many of the
honorees having ties to the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series. There will be five
inductees from three different categories.
Jimmy Mosteller will be inducted in the Lifetime Achievement category.
Mosteller is the Founder of the Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Late Model Series which
evolved into the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series, and his role with the series
continues as UDTRA's Goodwill Ambassador.
Joining Mosteller in the Lifetime Achievement category are Robert Smalley,
Ed Howe, Earl Baltes, and C.J. Rayburn.
The 1996 UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN will be inducted in
the Active Drivers list along with Mike Duvall, Buck Simmons, Jeff Purvis,
and Rodney Combs. In the Retired Drivers category, the inductees are Jack
Boggs, Jim Dunn, Larry Moore, Larry Phillips, and Charlie Swartz.
The induction ceremony will take place on August 25 at Florence Speedway
Union, KY as a part of the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series North-South 100.
