York Triathlon Series announces season opener
Pittsburgh, PA (May 6) - The York Triathlon Racing Series Modifieds will hold their 2001 season opener on Friday, May 11. The event will take place at Raceway 7, located six miles south of Interstate 90 on Ohio Route 7, near Conneaut, Ohio. The season opening event will be the running of the Second Annual "Spring Fling 35," which will be sponsored by Applebee Motorsports from Clymer, NY. The gates at Raceway 7 open at 5:30, with the first race set for 7:30. For more information on Raceway 7, the track phone is 440-594-2222, or visit their web site at www.raceway7.com.
A large contingent of cars are expected to follow the Series this season, due to the fantastic support that the Series receives from the tracks that make up the events. Each track that is a part of the Series has pledged to make any race at their track that conflicts with a York Series event, to be a non-point event at their track. This will allow the drivers the freedom to make Series races, without costing themselves points at their home track.
The Raceway 7 event will be the first of 14 that will make up the York Modified 2001 schedule. After the only event in May, there will be three races held in June.
New to the York Series schedule will be the first-ever event run in the state of West Virginia. Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne will host an event on Saturday, June 9. The "Mountaineer Challenge" will be part of the track's "Border Wars" program, which will also feature a match race between the top drivers of the York Triathlon Series and their neighboring sanctioning body AMRA.
The following weekend will find a pair of Series events taking place. The weekend will start at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, for the running of the Annual "Coy Brothers Classic" on Friday, June 15. The weekend will end at Tri-City Speedway near Franklin, PA, for an event on Sunday, June 17, as a part of the All Stars vs. NCRA Eastern Showdown for Super Sprints.
York Heating and Air Conditioning returns as the Series title sponsor for 2001. York International is the largest independent supplier of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration products in the United States, and a leading competitor worldwide. York International is proud to be associated with the Triathlon Series, with their sponsorship through local dealer Stahl Plumbing and Heating, from Pittsburgh, PA. Stahl is the title sponsor of the Stahl Modified division.
Coy Brothers Trucking from Canfield, Ohio will also be returning in 2001 with their support of the Coy Brothers Trucking Dash. Each driver tallies points through their Heat Race and Dash finishes, and a separate point fund will be paid at the end of the season.
Lechman Communications is unable to return in 2001 as the Series B-Main sponsor, due to business commitments. George Lechman praised the participation that he received from the Series. A new sponsor is in the process of being sought. Points are kept from the events that are also known as the "Last Chance Race," the final event to qualify cars for the evening's "Feature Event." A champion is crowned at season's end.
