'Saturday Night Thunder' resumes this week at Volunteer
By Robert Walden
BULLS GAP, Tenn. (May 2) - After taking this past Saturday off due to ongoing construction work at the track, Volunteer Speedway will crank back up with an exciting five-division "Saturday Night Thunder" racing program on May 5.
The track was idle this past Saturday while several facility improvement projects were underway including, work crews busy laying down a new clay racing surface on the high-banks; installing a new concrete retaining wall along the inside of the backstretch; concrete work in the infield pit area to correct a longtime drainage problem; along with concreting a road for the cars to drive around in the pits and placing gravel where the haulers park; installing a new PA sound system; plus painting the grandstands.
The Saturday, May 5 racing program will feature Late Models, Super Stock, UMP (Open-Wheel) Modifieds, Sportsman and 4-Cylinders.
"Man, track owner Joe Loven, myself and others have really worked our tails off over the past week and a half on several projects at the track," said Volunteer Speedway Race Director David Bright. "The biggest undertaking was laying down a new clay racing surface, which was badly needed. We've brought some really good clay in here and, that in itself will give the racers a lightning-fast track.
"We really hated having to take a week off from racing, but there was just no way of getting everything finished in one week. We're still not through with everything we intend to do, but we're real excited about cranking back up with our racing program this Saturday night."
Pit gates will open Saturday at 4 p.m., while the grandstands will open at 5 p.m. Adult grandstand admission is $10, with all pit passes and backside tier-parking $20.
Hotlaps are scheduled at 6:30 p.m., qualifying at 7:30 p.m., and feature racing beginning at 8:30 p.m.
