Volunteer cancels Saturday's racing program due to construction delays
By Robert Walden
BULLS GAP, Tenn. (April 27) - Due to delays related to the new clay being applied to the racing surface at Volunteer Speedway this week by construction crews, track management regretfully has made the decision to cancel the Saturday, April 28 weekly racing program at the track. However, a complete five-division racing card will return to "The Gap" on Saturday, May 5.
Besides the application process with the heavy machinery laying the new clay on the high-banked, 4/10-mile track; a new inside concrete retaining-wall is being erected along the backstretch, plus portions of the infield pit area is being concreted to help correct a longtime drainage problem at the track when it rains.
"We have been working our tails off since Monday morning trying to get the new clay applied to the racing surface," said Race Director David Bright, "but unfortunately there's just no way we are going to be able to have this job completed to allow us to race at the track by Saturday night.
"Not only are we putting down new clay on the track, but a new concrete wall is being built along the inside of the backstretch, and work in the infield pit area where we are trying to correct a drainage problem has delayed us. But we will have all of the work finished by the middle of next week, and we will be racing on Saturday, May 5 at 'The Gap' on what should be a lightning-fast racing surface. The racers and fans have wanted new clay on the track for sometime, and we're working hard to give them what they want."
