Deery doubleheader completes series slate for April
VINTON, Iowa - A pair of weekend events brings the April portion of the Deery Brothers Summer Series to a close.
Davenport Speedway hosts the Friday, April 20 race and Quincy, Ill., Raceway is the site for the Sunday, April 22 event. The 15th annual series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models then takes a break for the start of the regular point season, resuming on Memorial Day at the Boone Speedway.
Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. on race day at Davenport. Hot laps are at 6 p.m. and racing is set for 7 p.m.
Quincy will see gates opening at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. hot laps and racing at 6:30 p.m.
The Monday, May 28 race at Boone will be paired with the Midwest Motorsports Best of the Midwest Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Stock Cars. Pit gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps are at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. is starting time.
While he has yet to win a Deery feature, Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb., has been consistent through the first three races and is the new series point leader. He's run second, sixth and fifth so far, for a total of 130 points.
Defending champion Mike Smith of Jewell won at Webster City and West Burlington and is now second with 122. Third is Rob Toland of Hillsdale, Ill., at 114.
Tommy Elston hails from Keokuk, a town rich in Late Model racing history. He made some history of his own last Friday night at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, becoming the 54th different driver to win a Deery Series feature race.
