Volunteer Speedway to host weekly opener this Saturday
By Robert Walden
BULLS GAP, Tenn. (April 2) - After having both early season special events (Spring Thaw and Modified March Madness) postponed due to inclement weather during the month of March, Volunteer Speedway track officials are looking to the skies for a little cooperation from Mother Nature to finally get the season-opener in the books this Saturday, April 7.
An exciting five-division racing program is scheduled, featuring the Late Models, UMP (Open-Wheel) Modifieds, Super Stock, Sportsman and 4-Cylinders.
"Man, the month of March was a killer for us weather-wise at the track," said Race Director David Bright. "For some reason we could just never catch a break when the weekend would roll around, because usually by Thursday the rain would move into the region and stay throughout the entire weekend, forcing us to postpone our scheduled races. But the long-range forecast for this Saturday night looks good, and trust me, we're ready to race.
"The track has provided race fans from all around East Tennessee some very exciting racing action for many years, and we're (track officials) anxious to get our first race in the books. We hope to see many familiar faces back at 'The Gap' this racing season, plus several new faces."
Pit gates will open Saturday at 4 p.m., with the grandstand gates opening at 5 p.m. Adult grandstand admission is $10, children 7-12 $3, and 6-and-under admitted free. All pit passes and backside tier-parking admission is $20.
