Racers Enthusiastic About New Egypt Track Expansion
New Egypt, NJ (Mar. 24) - Over 115 anxious race car drivers got the green at
New Egypt Speedway on Saturday afternoon, trying out the newly-expanded
half-mile track in an open-to-the-public test-and-tune session. And the
verdict on the latest track expansion project? "We love it!"
"It's pretty much the same shape only bigger -- and much faster. We'll be
carrying a lot more speed into the first turn," said Phillipsburg, NJ,
Modified driver Gary Butler, a two-time winner at New Egypt last season who
turned laps in the 18-second bracket during the practice run. "With the
bigger track, it'll give guys more room to race and make it easier to pass.
It's going to be neat."
Sportsman driver Mickey Kessler, Farmingdale, NJ, was equally enthusiastic
about the bigger tri-oval. "It's very different to drive (turns) one and two
now. It's more of a gradual arc going into the backstretch instead of
'stop-and-turn' like it was before," said Kessler, a regular feature winner
in the Sportsman ranks. "The track size is great."
Speedway owners Rick and Nancy Grosso expanded their original third-mile
oval once before, in 1999. The latest expansion, to a half-mile, exaggerates
the track's unique "D" shape and features more dramatic banking in the
turns. All in all, it's a driver's track.
"Definitely!" stated Waterford, NJ, Street Stock ace Bill Gerber. "It's
wider, it's faster and the competition's will be better. I'm looking forward
to getting out there and racing for real."
Fans and racers will see the real deal this week, when New Egypt Speedway
officially opens for the 2001 season. The fire-breathing big-block
Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, and Mid-State Communications Rookie
Sportsman are featured on the season-opening bill, which kicks off action at
5 pm. Gates open at 2 pm.
Don't miss the first-of-the-season battles on the bigger track! Adult
admission is $13, children 7-12 are $4 and kids 6 and under are free. For
