Southern Park Mall set to host Mercer Raceway Park Race Car Show

By Mike Leone

Mercer, PA.The Southern Park Mall in Boardman, Ohio is set to host the
second annual Mercer Raceway Park, "Where Saturday Nights Come Alive", Dirt
Track Race Car Show Wednesday through Sunday, March 14-18. Hours for the
show are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This will be the second straight year for the show. Last year was the first
time in nearly 30 years that race cars had been permitted in the Mahoning
County mall. Mall management stated, "It was the most people we have seen in
the concourses other than Christmas time."

"We got a great response last year from many fans of the old Canfield (OH)
Speedway, and talked to many people who didn't realize that this caliber of
racing was just across the border in Pennsylvania," noted owner Vicki Emig.
"It's an excellent opportunity for us to market Mercer Raceway Park to a
fresh, new audience."

Saturday night will be the kickoff of McElwain Family of Dealerships "Meet
Your Heroes" Nights. From 6-8 p.m., drivers will be signing autographs. Make
sure the kids stop by the Mercer Raceway Park booth to pick up their free
custom autograph card. Drivers and fans can stop by and get the latest news
including the just-released 2001color tri-fold schedule.

In the sprint car division, Mike Kekich, Gary McCollum, Jack Sodeman, Jr.,
and Gary Edwards' machines will be on display. Kevin Bolland, Rex King, Rob
Kristyak, and Ray Baselj are among the big-block modifieds. The sportsman of
Andy Paden and the six-cylinder of Lou Gentile will also be there with their
modifieds. Brian Miller's stock car will draw some attention along with the
stocks of Dan Fedorchak and Jeff Smith.

The e-mods will return on October 5-6 for our Little Guy Nationals. Be sure
to check out the cars of Arlan Coy and Bob McCann, which will be competing
in the event. Travis Miniea's midget car will represent NAMARS as they take
on ARDC at the raceway on June 23.

The restored King Bros. #65 that was driven by Russ Woosley and Vic George
will bring back memories of the days gone by; it will be part of our 50th
anniversary display.

Three-time world champion, Jordan Lustik, will have his unlimited super
stock "Silver Bullet" tractor for all to see. His powerful machine
represents the ATPA for the "Spring Nationals" event at the raceway on May

Fans of all ages will get a chance to see an up close look at a demolition
derby car. Ryan Boyd, our 2000 champion, will have two demo cars on
display-a crashed and new one.

Mercer Raceway Park became title sponsor of the New Castle (PA) Soap Box
Derby May 26-27. Some of these cars for the youngsters will be set up.

Ray's Racing and Em's Broidery will be selling collectibles and merchandise.
Be sure to pick up the new 2001 Mercer Raceway Park t-shirt that will be
available by the weekend.

Elder Sales & Service and Elder Ag & Turf have provided a new John Deere
Gator for use at the raceway during 2001. The Gator will be on display at
the mall. Ohio's K-105 is helping to promote the event through radio. Stop
