The 33rd annual Lernerville Awards Banquet was held Saturday, March 3rd
at the Days Inn, South of Butler, which officially capped the 2000 season.
Approximately 450 people celebrated in this fun filled occasion. Freeport
Kiwanis member **** Swartzlander gave the invocation.
The four champions were introduced and they were as follows:
Triangle Gasoline Sprints- David Scott, Garland; Friedman's Supermarkets/BiLo
Foods Late Models- Nick Jones, Pittsburgh; Ferrante Oldsmobile
Modifieds-Brian Swartzlander, Leechburg; and Dingbat's Restaurants Pure
Stocks- Joe Kelley, Mt. Pleasant.
Before dinner emcee Mike Dutko announced the recipients of the following
special awards:
1. Most improved driver award:
Sprints- Kevin Schaefer #9
Late Models- Tom Kitchen #17T
Modifieds- Gary Risch Jr #3G
Pure Stocks- Terry Faas #T2
2. Hard Luck Award……………..Herman Bertolini, Pure Stock #7X
3. Sportsmanship Award………….David Scott crew-Late Model #3
3. Sportsmanship (tie)……………...Art Osmer -#6a
4. Rookie of the Year Award……………Neil Tristani, Pure Stock #7N
5. Lernerville Appreciation Award…….Pit coordinator-Jimmy Magill
6. Bob Cochran Sponsorship Award-Ferraccio Family Supermarkets
7. Bill Steinbach Media Award..D. J. Johnson-WPTT, Inside Track
8. Milestone in Racing- Al Deane celebrated 50 years of racing as an owner.
9. Grover Clasper Come Back Award….Troy Preston-Sprint #1P
10. David E. Bauman "Golden" Humanitarian Award..Ron Kosecki, for his many
deeds in racing as well as in the community.
The Don Martin Memorial Award for the Enhancement of Auto Racing was give to
Jean Lynch in February at the Daytona Florida RPM Workshop dinner.
The ARCH Fan Club Sportsmanship Awards were presented to Sprint driver
Ralph Spithaler and Late Model owner Art Osmer at the January banquet in
Lernerville Speedway co-owner Patty Martin Roenigk was delighted to learn
that her late father, Don Martin would be to be inducted into the National
Sprint car Hall of Fame in Iowa on June 2nd and knows that he would be proud.
She also stated, "The first TNN televised Pennzoil World of Outlaws Show at
Lernerville June 1st will be a tribute to my father"
After a delicious buffet dinner, plaques and point monies were given to
the top ten drivers and owners in each "Fab Four" division. Dingbat's
Restaurants presented each Pure Stock driver with a dinner for two at their
Mid Atlantic Championship Late Model promoter Jeff Geesey announced a
Late Model special will be run at Lernerville Friday, May 11th. The
fantastic Sprints and popular Pure Stocks are also on the racing card
Scott Bochek and Sprint chauffeur Ed Lynch were the recipients of the #1
Cochran Cavalcade Awards that were given by Walt Wimer and KDKA'S
sportscaster Don Gamble.
Promoter Albert "Ouch" Roenigk gave thanks to all the people that help to
make Lernerville a special place to be on Friday night.
Due to health reasons, Co-Promoter Garry "Arch" Hunter has retired from
Donny Martin Roenigk announced the upcoming 2001 Lernerville schedule. In
June he will graduate from high school and this fall Donny will be attending
Bowling Green University.
After the door prizes were awarded, friends chatted and dance into the
wee hours of the morning to "Night Moves" by Dave. This officially caps the
2000 season.

Signifying the start of a New Year, the Butler Mall Car Show will be March
8-11. The Natrona Heights Highlands Mall Car Show is the following week,
March 15-17.
Circle Friday, March 31st on your calendar, which is opening day at the
Lernerville Speedway!
