OK I have a stock 2300 and have a $400 claim rule for the hole car. I want to invest $200 on the engine. Can someone give me some advice on this. I only want to spent $200 max so please be specific on your advice. For example if you mention a cam upgrade you should also mention that new followers would also be needed. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Mill the head .100 to bump the compression up and do a valve job. Milling the head wil retard the cam too for more RPM.

Add a motorcraft two barrel carb off a 302 or 351. Take the adapter off and bolt the carb staright to the manifold. Rob some jets from other carbs while you're at the junk yard.

Basic tune up. Cap, rotor, plugs. Good gas with the timing welded solid and more timing.

Good luck,

wont you need a cam with more overlap in order to take advantage of the higher compression.

It works the other way around. Higher compression helps an engine at lower speeds with a high overlap cam. At lower speeds the cylinder doesn't fill well with a higher overlap cam.

If you have the budget for a bigger cam it would surely make a difference but I was trying to stay within you're $2000 limit.

Run at least 50% racing gas and bump the timing to 34 degrees. Weld the distibutor solid so the timing is in all the time.
