Smalldog,
I am relatively new to it also, but I am racing in a stock division where we can only have a .450 lift valve and no headers, with street tires 8 " wide max.

The rules at the individual tracks vary tremendously and some things need to be known to give good advice. I run a .4 mile dirt track and am still learning for sure myself. But from what I can gather you should run your timing up on the motor to around 35- 36 deg to obtain the best performance out of the motor, but be forewarned overheating is often an issue when running the timing up.

As for the carb , Im told that 72 holley jets are the ones to use or to begin experimenting with. I havent changed the jets in mine yet but will do it in time. Right now Im learning to drive on the track with absolutly stock horsepower and trying to race clean and finish every race and not interfere with the guys running to win. Im in it for fun and really dont care if I finish dead last every race. Sure I would love to win one but it isnt at the top of my priorities right now. learning to drive is.

My advice would be to keep the performance modifications to a minimum until you get some experience under your belt. BTW safe racing at the track and finishing all the races im now 5th in the overall points so safe racing will pay off a little.

Hope the advice helps some.
