After having to take off almost four consecutive weeks of action due to weather-related freeze-outs and the 4th Annual Yeager’s Cycle Coliseum ArenaCross, the K.A.R.T. sanctioned speedway karts came back in a big, and wild way Saturday night to perform in race number 12 of the Coliseum Indoor Winter Speedway Kart 2002-3 Racing Series. Combined with the first addition of a ‘Banked Track Dirt Bike’ division (most normally known as Dirt Flat Track Motorcycles), 108 entries cranked out a whopping 70 events. The special motorcycle classes will resume with the karts through the end of this season, which ends two weeks from now on March 22nd.

Traveling all the way down from Bondurant, Iowa, Thor “Lightning Bolt” Anderson picked up a pair of feature event wins; the Goody’s Steakburger Junior 1 Light and Busso’s AA Muffler Junior 1 Heavies.

It was the ‘full house’ (maximum 12 starting karts in the ‘A’ Junior 1 Heavy run that was the most competitive, and wildest of the night. On the first start try, young Nick Jones from Independence was involved in a crash that sent he and his car into a hard end-over-end flip with the kart landing on TOP OF him. He walked away okay. Toward the end of the rough affair, fourth and fifth place runners J.R. Beers and Peculiar’s Jeannette Carver were caught in a massive fourth turn crash. Carver’s kart landed on top of Independence’s Beers and both spun wildly to a stop in the infield. In time Beers recovered, but it was judged best to send Carver to the hospital by ambulance for a more detailed check-up. Her condition was unknown at press time.

Her father, well known kart and asphalt modified driver Rick Carver, did not compete in the Stock Heavy class, in which he is defending the class title, when it came up later on. He had accompanied his daughter for the physical evaluation.

Anderson copped the top spot while super-close pacers Will Wolf and Stephon Brown finished right behind in that order.

Columbia, Missouri’s nationally famed karter Mikey Halliburton took in more racing action around the country this season, but his return this night notched victories in both the Comfort Inn Stock Light and Mazzio’s Pizza Stock Medium venues.

Two-cycle ace and points leader Mike Floyd from Missouri’s capitol city was the only other double-trouble winner in the Russell Karting Specialties 2-cycle Contolled and KDKD-FM “Checkerfed Flag “ Opens.

Fulton’s Patrick J. Mahnken gets better all the time. He was the only multiple class driver competing in three different divisions. Patrick won the TCI Tire Centers Junior 2 Heavies, in which he’s the points leader, zipped to second in the Junior 2 Lights and drove hard in the ‘wide open’ c lass to finish second behind Floyd.

It’ll be another “Saturday Night Kart-Fever” this coming weekend when the top competitors return for more thrilling action.

Pit gates open at 1 pm, the grandstands at 3, hot laps at 4 with the first round of qualifying heats firing up at 5 pm.

Admission to the grandstands for adults is $5, 7 to 10 years old-$3 and under 6 years of age, free.
