'Shorthose Brothers' Come Out Long in Wins!
by Tom Wilson-pma
Sedalia, Missouri
Saturday, 01/04/03
The kart entry count was the lowest ever in the five year history of the “Coliseum Indoor Winter Speedway Kart Racing Series” Saturday night due mostly to the “Knoxville Nationals of Karting” type of yearly event on the same weekend in Tulsa, Oklahoma. However, the action was at a thrilling and close-finish pace between 68 entrants in an exciting 39 event card.
Rolling into the night with the points lead in one of two classes he competes in weekly, Fulton's Jordan Holland copped wins in both the Goody's Steakburger Junior 1 Light and Busso's AA Muffler Junior 1 Heavy divisions. For Holland, they were his fifth and sixth wins so far this season. He leads the points in the 'heavies'.
Jefferson City's sibling team of Ryan and Wendell Shorthose, found themselves chasing one another. Ryan was across the line first in the
Russell Karting Specialties 2-Cycle Controlled 15 circuit affair while brother “Showtime” again came out tops in the Open classification. Both classes were doubled-up in the same run during the night's action.
If there were a weekly bad luck award it would have all gone to Columbia's Adam Hall. Hall had the lead until the final two turns in the Schilby's Auto Center Jumior 2 Lights when he and eventual winner Josh Fisher from Smithton, the current point leader, collided vying for the top spot. Later, he then led the TCI Tire Centers Junior 2 Heavy, 15 lap melee, but was charged from the inside hard in turns one and two, forcing him high and out of contention. Class points leader in that fray, Patrick S. Mahnken from Fulton, came out first at the line.
For only the second time this season a young driver in the Anderson Racing Kart Engines' Rookier Beginner class became a multi-winner. And for the second week in a row. Graden “Bubba” Lovelace from Elsberry, which is a mere forty-five minutes west of Saint Louis, found the trek profitable once again. Points leader Dylan Timmerman and another previous feature winner, “Flash” Jordan Howell, fought it out for second and third. A record 13 karts were scheduled for their 10 lap, main grind.
Boonville's Billy Hurt, who doubles as both a racer and the main EMT, was not called on for his second job's services as there were no serious shunts. All competitors were all able to stay 'rubber down' through the 2 hour and 47 minute program eight of the series.
The racing fans, out for their wintertime 'need for horse-powered speed', definitely get their attendance money's worth every week, including this coming Saturday night's 5th event of the series.
That, along with the supplied heat in the historic Missouri State Fairgrounds building and the 'Coliseum Karting Concessions' delicious food, fans and competitors always look forward to returning.
Admission to the grandstands for adults is $5, 6 to 10 years old-$3 and under 6 years of age, free. The pit office starts taking sign-ins at 1 p.m., the grandstands are unlocked at 3, hot laps circle at 4 with the first qualifying heat flagged for 5 pm.
