if i take out my vacuum advance does it matter in what position i fasten down the arm that the rod was hooked to? can i turn it way around and tap and install a stud in the cast boss in the base of the dist.? and finally, if i block off the vac unit and reset timing, will i achieve the same results? thanks for your help.

you should fasten the arm that hooks to the pickup coil down in the same spot or you will be messing up your timing of the rotor to fire under the correct pin of the cap. I think if you just leave the advance unhooked and maybe put a tack weld on the rod,you would be just fine.

go to your gm dealership they make a plate that you bolt on and it locks it where you want it i believe they came on c-60 dump trucks

just pull it all out and put one of the screws that held the vac on. back thru the hole that the rod was in, you need to flatten it a little and i snip the end of it open..

you can put it in any position you want, it doesnt matter.

as for hitting the right post on the cap, thats call timing..

i've heard of the plate race17j. i looked in a couple of performance catalogs and couldn't find it. i'll check the dealership today. thanks guys!
