It was recommended to me to use a bronze distributor gear with an HEI distributor after we tore up a cam. The info I have read indicates to use a bronze gear only with roller cam. We only use flap tappet solid cams (for example: Elgin and Crower). Can anyone answer this question before I blow up an engine?
Thanx

bronze for steel billet rollers.

I assume you mean you tore up the cam gear. Chances are you had something that didnt fit right or your distributor gear had a problem and the two didnt mesh and that is what tore it up.

OK, if I use the bronze gear with a flat tappet or hydraulic cam, will it destroy the cam gears or high volume oil pump? Or will the gear just wear out quicker?

i see a lot of guys "rod check" their engines or hot lap before the engine is up to temperature. this is a no-no. don't race your engine before all the temps are up. it puts a lot of stress on everything, especially the distributor gear when you have a high volume oil pump.

When the gear has a fairly large load on it, like an oil pump, a bronze gear won't last very long at all, but it will not hurt the cam gear as it wears out. Once a cam gear has a distinct wear pattern on it, NO gear will last long at all. Crud in the oil pump did us in a couple of seasons ago. I was changing dist gears(iron) sometimes twice a day, just to finish out season. Now, with dry sump, even bronze gears look pristine.. no load.

I lost a cam gear last year and went with the bronze gear with no probs. Now the reason i lost cam gear was from excessive cam walk and gear was a tad to high on the cam gear, once i got those 2 things right the bronze gear had min wear for running all season. ( with flat tappet)

We have been using the same bronze gear for at least 8 seasons with no wear. Usualy will only wear if gesr is pushed down too much into cam.
