I am planning on getting a set of schoenfelds or dyna tech, not sure yet though on what size tubes , rules state must have 3.5in collector and must exit behind driver or out of bodyside, mufflers mandotory. This is a 3000lb street stock, 358 about 500-550 list cam somewhere around 7-7500 rpms max about 5000 coming out of turns (dirt 1/2mi) I was thinking maybe 1 3/4
or a stepped tube. Any thoughts on this.

I'd use the 1-5/8" stepped to 1-3/4"

dyna-tech makes a much better header but are a little heavier. just my 2 cents...........

The only headers i could find with 1 5/8 to 1 3/4 have 3in collectors, would it hurt to expand a 3in to 3 1/2 or should I just stay with the 1 3/4 with 3.5 collector. How much is there to be gained with a stepped tube?

i like stepped like sdhnc 29 said and schoenfield all the way they are decent and cheap!!!

The stepped header will pick up some mid-range for you . I'm assuming that you are running a somewhat limited type of engine , so it will be important to keep the 3" collector size . There is always a way around the rules . I would either expand the last 1" of the collector to 3-1/2" , or add a short piece of 3-1/2" tubing to your 3" collector . This would be pushing the gray area of your rule on collector's , but it's a very arguable modification . After all ...... they would measure 3-1/2" at the opening

P.S. You could also use a merge collector !
