I just bought a new Flamethrower HEI for my street stock. When I installed it, I noticed that it engaged the the cam gears but did not set completely on the intake manifold. I added another dist. gasket and it almost filled the gap. I ran the motor anyway for one night, but I just removed the dist. and the brand new gear has some notable wear marks on it. It looks like I need to raise the dist. for better gear meshing, but what do you do; keep adding gaskets? A few more gaskets would probably do, but is this common practice or what?

I'd check the oil pump drive. The dist should bottom out with no gasket. you have a clearance problem somewhere and you must repair it.

I ran a stock 4 barrel intake and i needed only one gasket....switched to victor jr. this year and it took a couple to stop it from bottoming out. I would add a couple gaskets till it doesn't bottom out.
