i just got a used shortblock today. has 5.7 carillo rods, steel crank (GM 1182) domed pistons,(.060") overbore, rollercam. i need to change to solid lift cam. do i need to run restricters in back of the block? must use production straight plug heads, which ones to use with domed pistons? any ideas on cam? any help would be apreciated. thanks neil

I'd use the Crower Cool Face lifter , which has an EDM hole on the lifter face , and pressure feed's oil straight to the cam lobe . No you do not need restrictor's , especially if you use the Cool Face lifter . Be sure to remove the plug's from the lifter valley , if they are plugged .

Ok my question is why wouldnt you want to run restrictors in the block espically with a roller cam and probably high oil pump he probably has a good pan crank scrapers and so on so forth why not keep the oil in the pan?

neil rucker ,
What size dome's ?? If they are small domes , then I'd use the 492 casting , if it must me an OEM head . If the dome has room to do a little modifying , then I'd go with the Vortec head .

iowa_dirt_track_girl ,

Because he is switching to a flat tappet cam . Provided that his lifter valley is open to drain back into the pan and with the Cool Face lifter's restrictor's are not required or recommended .Plus the oil that is pressure fed to the cam will return directly to the pan . Even with a roller cam , if a guy has a modern "good" oil pan with the correct crank scraper's and trap door's , you want to get as much oil to the valve spring's as you can . We have not used restrictor's in any Chevy engine in many year's , roller or flat tappet .
