Hi. First yr in V-8 racing. I have $500.00 to spend on my motor. I have a short block 2 bolt 350 that is useable and a 350 4 bolt that needs to be put together (machine shop work, balancing?. What would you spend the money on? Have stock heads from 283,350, & 305, which ones do I use? 1/4 mile dirt. Please point me in the right direction if possible. Thanks

Being a smart shopper,$500 will go far on your 350 shortblock. If it is your 1st year v8 racing, kept the other for a build up motor when the funds allow you to spend a bit more money. Rules will set you up for items that you will need on the top half of that motor. If you can port match,do that yourself. A die grinder,a set of Fel Pro gaskets and away you go. Intake manifold, look for a 313 casting # if you need to run a 2 barrel. For a cam, with your budget,go to ebay motors and type in imca and a gettlemen has cams to fit your budget. Spend a little cash on a HEI freshin up. Upgrade that unit just a bit. Heads are something you may look further into. Some of the 305 heads work to build horsepower on a 350,I am unsure which ones are the best. There are alot of good used parts on the market. On the Imca site, they have a classified section with racers selling many items, very much like hear on the dirtforum.

Thanks for the help! I"ll search ebay. Rules call for stock everything. Roch. 2bbl can run holly jets and we can run a cam. Last yr Champion had about $4,000 in "stock motor", we can claim on heads only, $200.00 but They are in a small town and I'm a out of towner. Thinking about moving up to street stock where I can run headers and 4bbl. I will still get beat, but will be within the rules. Just rambling.

Racenmud-if I was in your shoes, I'd get on the phone and call up some of the guys who are running up front in the class your considering. THEY WILL HELP U! Nobody likes to drive around the same car putting some poor ignorant schmuck laps down in a short race. EVERYONE I KNOW will help out a new guy till he gets started running decent. Keyword: listen.
The locals probably use one or two machine shops and the machinists at those shops won't steer you wrong either. And the advice you can get on this forum is unreal!!!
I buy most of my parts online at www.dirttrackthunder.com. Steer clear of used junk on e-bay. In my opinion, if it was worth keeping the guy wouldn't be selling and if it was worth buying...one of his buds would buy it.

Hey 17j I guess I should have capitalized USED junk on e-bay. And you're dead-on about purchasing NEW parts on line. An eantroupenuer (you try spelling it!) with a computer and some time can save us racers BIG $$$ over a big store with loads of overhead. There's a guy in Florida I've gotten some deals off of too, but I don't remember his web addy.
If you're thinking that I'm affiliated with dirttrackthunder-you're wrong. I just like to pass on a good deal when I find one...like the three 2 5/8" guage set by Sunpro at Actron.com for $16...I chunked the ampmeter, made my own panel with a coupla dummilites and...I'm happy widdit!
