I am planning on runnin a .60 BB Chevy till it goes with a fresh valve job done to the heads , new cam , timing gear and chain. What is the most critical thing I should check for in the cylinders-rings? I heard about a special caliper type tool that checks for egging...a tool for compression ring end gap...but is that about it? Is there an old school method that checks the sealing of all the rings or somethin?

I am assuming you had the block bored and honed already. The way I check my rings are to slide each piston in the bore 1 at a time with no rings on it and seat each ring down on top of the piston and check the end gap with a feeler gauge and adjust as required. That way each set of piston rings is matched to each cylinder. Also this way you know the rings are setting square and the measurement is accurate. Each cylinder will vary a small amount from each other so if you check the rings one cylinder at a time you are sure your gaps are right. Also if you are just reringing a previously bored block you may want to have the cylinders light honed for proper ring seating. I am not sure what all was done to the block but that should take care of setting ring gaps. What work that was done on the block effects what else you may have to do(I.E. checking for out of round).
