Hi, I have a 1958 283 block that I was thinking of trying in my stock bomber. I don't have the vent tube that is in the back of block. Is it needed and if so where can I get one. I'm running a 3.08 gear with a t350 on a 1/4 bank dirt, was thinking the 283 could turn more R's than my 350. Any help will be sincerely appreciated! Leon

Put a plug it it.The valve cover breathers will do the job.

RPM ain't everything. There is no replacement for displacement. Quick story: ARCA/Remax car, young driver, has been turning 7800rpm or so at short tracks, qualifying in mid field. We go to St. Louis, his first restrictor plate track. Practice, he's turning mid field lap times, all of a sudden, times increase by about 2 seconds a lap. Seems he did not like turning "only" 6400rpm, so puts car in third gear, to "get the rpm back up where it needed to be"!! True story, but he knows better now. The point is, it's the MOST torque under the curve that counts, whether that occurs from 3500-5500rpm, or 8500-10500. That block may be worth something to a collector or restoration guy.

I have an older intake that uses one like this >

Street Rod Products>
Oil System-Pans/Pumps/Trays/Coolers>
91017441 OIL BREATHER TUBE

I lost the tube one night and ran across the one listed above some time later. There is a freeze plug covering the hole now.

Seems like with a bomber you would want use the bigger motor.

What gear are you running the transmission in?

3.08 x 2.52(low)=7.76 you should be getting plenty of R's - may have too much gear

3.08 x 1.52(2nd)=4.68 may need more gear

the back of the block? i beleive you are referring to the can that lays in the intake, the older motors use this to let the bottom end breathe, you should be able to find one in a junkyard.

Ok, still working on this thing. The balancer is just pressed on with no bolt to hold it. Will this be a problem. Also, moved to a powerglide tranny so my final gear should be 5.61. OK? Thanks!

nope that sounds more like a half mile track gear,i'd guess you need something like a 6.50 gear or deeper.

that gear would work if you ran tiny tires like a 74-75 in roll but i'm willing to bet yuo run some taller ones than that

this may sound like a dumb ? but how do you figure the final ratio. I was told the tranny plus the rear but this doesn't jive with what you guys are saying. What am I missing?

Hi Racer, Yeah it is tough to find little tires. I'm running 205/70/15 on 8" rims. It is about an 82 roll. I'm going try anf find some 3.73 gears on Ebay. Should get me to 6.80. Thanks!

final ratio = trans ratio X rear end ratio
