i never rebuilt my own engine until now. i tore everything down and the block is at the machine shop but im porting and polishing the heads my self. my question is how do i remove the valve springs? i have a valve spring compresser but i dont kno how to take the spring off. any help is appreciated! someone help !!! thanks in advance.

You just compress the spring down and remove the two valve locks and the spring comes right off.I use a small screwdriver or a small magnet to get them out of the retainer.

sometimes they won't budge and you need to tap em a little around the retainer just don't get too wild with the hammer.

Are you using the lever type compressor, if so you will need to place it on the rocker arm stud through the little slot and then place a nut on the stud and pry the spring down. Place a sturdy wad of rags under the head directly under the valve your working on, this will give the valve something nice to rest on while you un-seat the valve and retainers. If you don't put anything under the valve, you may just chase the valve al the way down. Good luck

I use a large wooden woodworkers clamp and clamp it to the bench which makes life alot easier. As you compress the spring , you prolly have to do like these guys are saying and give it a heavy swing with a sledge hammer right on the retainer......no man just kidding.....use a rubber hammer or a reg. one VERY gently.

When we take off springs we either use a large socket underneath or cut out some wood to fit the chamber. Not to take the wind outta your sails but if you don't know how to take off the springs you proablly shouldn't be porting your own heads. Take them to a professional or just leave them alone you might end up losing power or worse yet turn your heads into door stops. Just my opinion.

I agree on the take it to somebody cause if you grind the wrong place you have some scrap cast iron.Depending on what heads you have that could be a big $ screww-up.
