What do you guys do about storing fuel over the winter? I’ve got about 10 gallons of Cam2 still in the fuel cell. Do you drain it into a fuel jug or leave it in the cell? I know that it gets to smelling “stale” after a while, but has it really gone “bad”. What harm does it do to just leave in the car ‘til spring?

What about fuel lines and fuel filter? I suppose if you empty the cell, you should empty these too.

And what about the fuel pump and carburetor? Should you just empty out as much gas as you can get out of them?

We like to see all our carbs torn down each year and cleaned fully and freshened with new gaskets and all "consumable" parts. The same goes, really, for the rest of the fuel system.
Fuel will evaporate and lose its hydrocarbons over time, and that is the power-making end of the fuel that you're losing, so storage in a cool, dark, dry place, in a sealed container is helpfull.
Also, when fuel evaporates fully, it leaves white powdery deposits everywhere. That "white death" does nasty things to many areas in the entire fuel system from cell, to pump, to carb.
Alky fuel systems are even MORE critical as far as maintenance goes.
Our best recommendation is to drain the cell dry, remove and air dry the foam and fully drain and dry the lines, pump, filter, regulator, all fittings, etc etc etc. If convenient, plug the ends of the lines if you're going to shelve them over the winter, and then go at the carburetor - that is, if you don't send it back to your carb builder (wink wink), for freshening.

BTW, this may be a good time to poke all my carb customers with a stick and get them thinking about getting their carbs to us for discounted off-season freshening. Returning customers get 50% discounts from now till January.

Hope that helps get y'all thinking...

i left fuel in my cell one winter (112 racing gas) and blew head gaskets and burned a hole in the deck of the block first night out. maybe it lost its octane rating from sitting??? i know the next year i put stabil in and all was well. this year i am going to get rid of the gas and start fresh for next year.
