i have a 400 block,but the rules say i can't go over 362 cu.in. I have 993 heads 350 crank, and need to run the small balancer. I seen in hear where the 400 was good tough block. I have a 305 lunati cam solid lift, but need tp know the lift on it.We run on a 1/4 mile track. An is this a good cam to run.

A 400 standard bore block with a 350 (3.48") crank is 372.1 C.I.
You need a shorter stroke to stay under your 362 C.I. limit.

you'd have to run a 327 large journal crank with custom pistons to get below 362 and you would have to really spin it to make up for the lost torque.

Can the techman tell it's a 400 with the 350 crank in it. An can it help any on horsepower. Over a 350 30 over bore. i need some more off the corner.

You can see right away that you are running a 400 block by the extra freeze plug on the side of the block, even with the real old 400s, you can see where the freeze plug would go. As far a the crank goes, just looking at it you probally couldnt tell, unless they brought out all the gauges to actually check to see what you are running...

There are also bulges in the block (on the sides, running top to bottom, to give more room for the larger bore) that are easy to spot/feel. If your tech guy is not a moron, he will know .... my experience with tech guys would suggest that you will probably get away with it, but .... don't know if there is a big enough advantage (if any) that would make this combo make sence .

build a 362", 9/16 motor (sbc350,.030" over stroked to 3.5625), lots of torque , no worries about tech.

the very late 400 blocks just have a 509 on side easy to grind off.I beleive they are 79'up truck motors.

**** , if you're gonna cheat, make it a 406. Use a 350 balancer, have the crank guy put in some mallory up in the front counterweight to properly rebalance. He will know what to do. You will definitely have more off the corner. There are some 400 blocks that only have 2 freeze plugs, and are outwardly identical to 10/20/509/532 350 blocks, EXCEPT for those telltale bulges!

or spend the $$$ on having the 400 internally balanced so it uses 350 balancer and flywheel. but if your tech guy has a puffer you wont be able to get passed that......

Its way way cheaper to buy a good steel 4340 crank that is allready built for internal balancing, eagle makes a 50# one now thats 399.99 brand new 4340...

BHJ sells a 6.25 inch balancer for externally balanced engines. $109 plus shipping. Degreed with a retention ring on the back of the balancer to keep it from separating. Nice piece.
