I may be wrong, but the Mexico block is the same block GM uses in some of their TargetMaster motors and Merc Cruiser uses in their boats.

The "hecho en mexico" blocks are OK (maybe slightly lighter than a stateside block even).

However, extra care should be taken inspecting/prepping these blocks. I think the castings are fine, but the original machine work is sometimes less than perfect.

Details like cam bearing hole alignment, distributor hole size (this one is a pain to fix up once the engine is assembled and in the car), and deck squareness are a must check item (personal experiences on more than one block).... and an align hone is a good idea as well.

We made piles of junk more than once by using Mexico blocks. Our experience was with "core shift" when they were cast, and the lifter bores were not geometrically in the same place from one side to the other. Ruined a couple cams that way, too.

If you have your choice, I'd stay away from them, unless (like the above posts say) you go thru and check EVERYTHING and correct anything that is out of spec.

Not worth taking the chance, IMHO...

I'd stay away from that junk. I've seen
a few cracked blocks between cylinders.
