I'm looking to upgrade my engine program for my modified next year and would like some advice.
I've been running a 355 chev on alcohol. With the rear gear I was running, I was getting 6200-6500 rpm on 1/3- 3/8 type tracks. First off, I want to go to a deeper gear (from 5.43 to 5.67) to get more pull coming off the corners. However, I think I have to pick up a few things to get the additional revs I'll need at the ends of the straights. I've been running a non-descript Holley alky carb, an HEI ignition with all of the Accel performance parts (super coil, module, etc) but no spark box. I've also just been running the Holley/Edelbrock block mount fuel pump. My questions:
1- What kind of a carb do I need to look at? (CFM rate and does a "name" like BG or Braswell make much difference at this level?)
2- What ignition upgrade is most desirable? (A DUI set up or MSD with box, etc?)
3- Fuel pump- is the block mount still ok for this size of engine, or do I need to go to belt driven?

Going from a 5.43 to a 5.67 is going to change your rpm range by only 250 or so. The mods you spoke of are good, but I wonder if you need to do anything at all? However, if you are running up against a 'wall' at 6500rpm, that is a different story.

Yes, I do feel like I'm getting all there is to get out of it at that range. I suspect the ignition system is the biggest culprit, but I'm not sure.
