there are several reasons for using a longer rod. a longer rod has less rod angle which gives the piston more leverage on the crank. a longer rod also has more dwell time at TDC and BDC which makes cam timing less critical and allows more time for the cylinders to fill.

some may disagree, but in my opinion a long rod engine will outperform a short rod engine of the same design. smokey yunick used to say, "put the longest rod that will fit in it, and go racing".

outlawstock17 hit it right on the nose!
use the biggest rod you can! but really think about your cam choices afterwards.
you threw a curveball to the people building cams in bulk for racers to use. try to call and ask someone how certain cams will work with longer rods. Comp has a very good R&D program.

I use longer rods IE 6" in a smallblock because of reliability less angle in the bore therefore less stress
