We Just installed a new engine and finally got it running great-- ran hot laps(4 laps) came in at 190 degrees---Run heat race(8laps) run greatcame in around 190-200 degrees- Ran feature race-got to 11 th lap was in second(running like a champ--Son said car popped real load then lost lost of power. Temp gauge was jumping from 190-230 degrees. He shut her down and brought it in and we found a plug wire off #7 cyl. Then when we got home started it up and the water is not flowing through the radiator into engine.When we start engine with rad cap on, it pressurises the upper hose as if all is well but when we remove cap the water is cold and almost explodes out of your hand. Lots of pressure agianst cap in less than a minute running. We have also installed hoses from the water inlet to the back of the intake as some of you guys were telling us to do to get water to the back of the head. What we did was drill the top of the inlet and put a tee fitting in it and run hoses to the left and right side of the heads on the back--Did we do this wrong??

We are running a 347 ford engine--just put new water pump on and different radiator and still does the same thing.. Could a vaccum leak cause this or what--

Help we are frustrated and a lot of racing to do this coming weekend..Please help...Thanks very much in advance Wheels

sounds pretty weird. is the engine running smoothly with the plug wire back on? did you figure out where the loud pop came from? was it an electrical pop? something breaking? backfire? was it in the exhaust? if you're getting a lot of pressure in the cooling system, it could be a cracked head, a blown head gasket or something of that nature. what do the plugs look like? are you losing any water? check the exhaust for water. you shouldn't need the additional water lines to the backs of the heads. have you done a compression test? can you provide some more information?

You may want to make sure the head gasket is not on backwards!! I have done this befor it gets hot fast and boils in the block.......

Yes compression test shows eveything looking good. goes to 180 and doesnt leak off any. The engine sounds smooth agian after putting plug wire on. Plugs look normal -no water in exhaust. What other info can I get for you ?? Thanks Wheels

see dirtracer14's post. when you install the head gaskets make sure that the end marked "front" is at the front of the block. one of the gaskets will have to be turned upside down.

Did you buy a whole motor or short block? The older 302 blocks needed to have holes added to the block just left of upper bolts.Fel-pro head gasket has instuctions on where and what size to make them.They say doing this keeps them from blowing head gaskets.With the irratic temp it would suggest leakage into cooling system.Are you running t-stat or a restrictor.Is your radiator lower than the motor possible air pocket.I run a 31x19 rad. and it runs about 190-195 with electric fans.Is your motor man around ask him if he has any ideas.Theres alot of people around building motors and not standing behind them.At least I've heard alot about it here in the midwest.I build my own motors and have had good luck doing it.

It sounds like somthing that we did. The motor would heat up very fast and hold alot of presure. We loaded it and took it to the track thinking maybe it would be fine, still doing it when we got there so i started asking around. A buddy of mine walked right up and told me i had the head gaskets on backwards. Well we had a choice to run it or pull 1 head and find out, sure enough it was on backwards or upside down (cant remember)so we swapped bolted the heads back on and away we went. The pits is not the best place to pull heads if i had a choice i would check it in the shop first.

Haven't found anything that looks bad yet but we pulled heads and had them checked and no problems there. We are making sure as we go back with it that all gaskets are correct. We will know saturday morning igf we fixed the problem or not--sure hope so!!

Dirtrace7-- I will check on these hole--the block was givin to us and we had a fellow build it that builds engines for a nascar driver so we figure he surely had it right.. All gaskets seemed to be the way they should have been-- The water inlet has a gutted out thermostat in it and has worked well for us before.

Will let you all know soon what the outcome is after tommorrow morning--Sheesh hope this thing runs--Frustrated Wheels

Holy cow !!!! We must of found the culprit as he run from 10th to 2nd and was running like a champ. The only thing we can figure is it almost had to be the head gaskets. Never got over 195 degrees so we think it is doing great.

As his luck has been running he was lapping a car and the lapped car spun out in front of him and the 3rd place care run into the back of him and took him out--but thats racing as you all know.

Thanks very much for all your responses as we appreciated them very much as we checked everything out that was posted so as not to miss anything..
