WE have just replaced the head gaskets and had a lttle head work done. Now we have it idleing fine but when we crack it open it pops and a ball of fire comes out left exhaust. It only does it on left side and seems to run good once on track but has a tiny miss at high rpm. Where do we start. timing is at 34 degrees. new plugs new wires- msd7 ignition.. any suggestions much appreciated.. Thanks in advance--Wheels

This is probably old info to you, but check your plug wires to make sure you don't have 2 switched, and make sure your cam matches the firing order that you are using. Had this exact problem years ago on a drag race engine, spent a LONG time hunting it down, slapped myself silly when I found the wires crossed.

Tom thats the sad part about this--We don't know what it has in it. We bought it from a guy that had just refreshed it and he had had it awhile. He wasn't sure what cam it had in it and told us to time it at 36 degrees and adjust valves to 20 Degrees both intake and exhaust.
the engine is a 312 ford with windsor 351 heads. it has been stroked. We don't know a whole lot more about the engine except that it hasn't been right since we bought it. had all kinds of problems-- Bent push rods-warped head-- bolts left out of back of engine. It's been a nightmare. Wish I could give you more info but don't have much more. We are running b-mod and using Blue racing fuel.About 2 more weeks and we will have a new motor.

thx for any suggestions-we will try most anything.

Also we have no power coming out of corners and about half way down the straight it finally kicks in and runs pretty hard.

Does anyone run 6.23 gears with these smaller motors on 3/8 track. That may help us get out and hold rpm's up. about 6500 rpm's is max now.

Thanks in advance--Wheels

I would check and try both 351 windsor firing order and the 302 firing order. Also what are you adjusting your valves to? Might be a little tight on the valves if I understand you correctly.

Tom thanks for input-- We are setting valves at .20 thousands--which is what we were told. Do you think this may be a bit tight????
Do You have handy the firing orders for each application??

Also can you get the distibutor gear off one tooth and still start the car?? This distributor is not like the chev distributor --eithe half on on half off.

Thanks for your input..

1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, 302

1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8, HO and 351

Yes, you can be one tooth off. The .020 lash shouldn't be too tight if you're setting your valves correctly.

.020in does not sound out of line for a solid lift cam. The 302 firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. The 351W/late 302 is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. If you are confident the motor is right, valves, valve lash, cam timing, plugs, wires. Check out that distributor. Is it stock? If so is the timing locked at full advance or are you running mechanical / vacuum advance?

Guys thanks for the info.. We are right now set up on the 15426378 firing order. It starts great. I think we have adjusted the valves correct but been a long time since I have done it.

If anyone wants to take the time to explain the correct procedure I would appreciate it and probably learn alot from it.

Distributor is an MSD. No advance--its locked down at 34 to 36 degrees--we've tried both. Motor does not get hot and we are enjoying that part of it but we feel it just isn't producing what it should.

We were running a 290 that had been worked over and was told it was around a 347--and now have dropped to a 302 with not alot done but was told it was around a 312. Does this sound right??? We're just learning about these buildups.--

Would you run same rearend or change to a diff gear?

Would there be alot of difference noticed in speed and torque.

It runs pretty good about half way down the straight but ***** coming off corner..

Thanks much in advance---Wheels

I dont run a 302 combo but I have heard you gotta twist em up there! I run a 351 windsor combo with a roller cam. I run a MSD dist with a little less timing than you are runnin. My engine builder had my dynoed with I think 30 of 32 degrees of timing, it runs real cool right there.

Wheels I run a 347 on 1/2 mile dirt.Cast iron intake and exhaust.I started with 5.14 gears turned about 5700 rpms with 27.5 tires.I changed to 5.43 gears and turned about 6000.Now I'm running 5.67 gears and turning around 6400--6500 thats problably close to max with cast iron rule. The car runs good and isn't lacking top end I run about 30 degrees of timing .From what I read the 347 likes 7000 rpms. Most other cars at the track run 5.14 with 27.0 tires.I ran this 5 races last year and 18 races this year and have had no mechanical problems so far.Its been a real dependable combo.I run a solid cam thats set at .016 and .018 so your close but they all are set a little different anyway. The cam timing and the 5.67 really brought mine to life. Before these changes I was getting walked on when the flag was dropped but now I get to do some of the walkin.
