when i time my 355 chevy the timing mark is steady until about 3200 rpms then the mark starts jumping back and forth about 3/4 of an inch what would cause this?

Bill:
Try a new dist. gear first. Its cheap and easy and quick to replace. If its an older motor the timing chain/gear may be worn. 3/4 inch movement is not so bad that I wouldn't run it. Always try to quick easy and cheap first.
