need help we seem to run around 200 in heat race,then 220 during feature,during a yellow it will run up to 240,then drop back a little when we restart.
plugs seem to be burning good,no noticeable power loss, 355,probably a little more blow by than we should have,32* timing,stewart water pump, flexi-lite 17" plastic fan,no restrictor or thermastat.
also if you know any "mechanics in a bottle" to help the blow by for a whilei would appreciate it.even at theese temps we are not loosing any water out of the radiator. thank you.

We have allways run a 160 t stat and kept the temp under control. I have tried to not run anything and it ran hot all night long.

I think all you need to do is put in either a 180 deg. thermostat or a restrictor, a 5/8" restrictor which is about the same as a 180 deg. thermostat, and that will definetly help bring you temp down. You said you run a stewart water pump which is probably a high volume pump with no restriction the water in the radiator never gets a chance to cool because it doesnt stay in the radiator long enough.

You guys need to go to the Stewart water pumps website and read their articles on cooling.
The solution to the problem is NOT to install a thermostat.
The old wives tale that the water is not staying in the radiator long enough is not correct, since the water is also not staying in the block as long either. The real reason
for this racer's overheating problem may be
the use of a plastic fan that does not pull enough air at hi rpms, or could be how it fits the shroud (if there is one).
Also, nobody asked about carb jetting either. Fuel pressure, jetting, float levels are just a few things that matter a lot more with alky than with gas.
Also, no mention of pulley ratio was made as I recall. Reduction pulleys (that is, anything more than 25%) are not needed unless long periods of time are spent at ultra hi rpms.
Firstly, tho, everyone should read the articles on the stewart water pumps website.
They will explain everything. And no, I'm not an employee. I just believe in passing on valuable info to those that can benefit from it.

NOT to say that you are not right....but saying that a t stat or restrictor is not the awnser to his problem is kinda Crazy. I have seen and heard of a lot of cars that ran hot without anything in em, then put a t stat or a restrictor in and have the problem go away. I am not saying that there are not other things wrong with the carb or fuel pressure, but putting a t stat in is real cheap and easy to do. The one thing that he said that I had the same thing happen in my car was the fact that it would drop back down once he started racing again, just like my car would do without anything in it! Now I also went with a plastic fan on my car and put it about 1" from the rad with no shroud with a 17"x21" rad and it keeps my car at 170 deg till i race then it stays right around 180 185. I mean this fan pulls so much that i have had to clean my rad after allmost every race do to the fact that it is pulling so much it pulls all the dust in the rad and never had to do it before. Now as for the fact that the plastic fans dont pull at high rpm ....I myself would care less if it didnt pull any when im going 90 MPH, i would think that the wind coming threw would be plenty. This is just my opinion take it for what its worth!

Sorry to sound rude there, didn't mean it like that at all.
Just trying to pass on info is all. I'm sure it may work by just putting in a T-stat or restrictor, but there is so much else involved that it also may not work either.

Whatever solves it, the best we can hope is that the results are shared and everyone learns from it.
That's what makes forums like this successfull...

We had that problem of running hot on alcohol, but since we added a fan shroud, I have needed to run a thermostat to keep the temp in the 190-200 degree range.

we ran a t-stat earlier in the year until a couple of weeks ago the temp got up to 245 (gas) we took the stat out and it now runs 200-215 after 20 laps.
like kp said, read the recomendations on the stewart website.

32 degrees sounds a little late to me, don't take that the wrong way, I've only run methanol in motorcycles and karts. I don't know if it would make it run hot or just kill bottom end power. just some thoughts.
