I picked up a couple of cams at a race parts auction last year, and I am trying to identify exactly what they are. They are marked as comp cams, and have some numbers scribed/stamped in the ends of them. They each have a number that is like FEC####. It looks like a factory type stamp, but I can't be for sure. I try calling there tech line, but they are ALWAYS busy. Can anyone help me out here? I am sure they are older, but they appear to be in good shape. I am using one I bought right now (it was marked) and it is working great. Thanks.

What type of cam (hyd,solid,roller) and what is the grind number on the end of the cam (example 300A-R6)

how do I tell which type of cam is which? I think they are solid lifter, but I don't know for sure. I will get the numbers from the end of the cams shortly. Thanks.

Ok...here we go. Both cams have this number stamped in the end:

1239636SHF-9

I am guessing this is a core number?

Ok..the first cam has this stamped below the first number:

99F1B

and this was also engraved (by hand, not by machine like the first two numbers):

FEC0052 162

Here is the second cams markings:

99C1A stamped

FEC0059 096 engraved

Can anyone help me identify these things? Thanks.

Try their website. I think they have a section that you can send info into them. A lot faster replies than by busy telephone lines.

You can try compcams.com. Usually their part numbers go something like 12-610-5. There is an online catalog there you can try browsing through to see if you recognize any of the numbers or the sequence of them to figure out what number you have. Other than that I suggest gettin comfortable on the phone and hold for a tech. rep. Ask the one you get on the phone about those cams and if they sound young ask for a "senior tech man". Some are familiar with cams that just aren't in the computer anymore and aren't afraid to look in the old books to find them.

Another way to find out the exact specs on the cams is to locate an engine shop which has a "Cam Doctor". This device measures the cam exactly and they can give you a print out everything, but you may still need to find out through other means if the cam is hydraulic or solid.

I went through all my books (compcams,crane,elgin) and nobody has any numbers like that in their books. If I was a betting man I would say they are GM cams, that number looks like a chevy part number.
Problably not what you wanted to here but you might check into that.

I didn't see those numbers in any of my books either, and a few of them have the casting numbers of some of the "good" Chevy cams from the 60's. I'm guessing they would be aftermarket because I've got 30-30 and 098 Duntov cams and those are marked with colored stripes and the part numbers are cast into them between the lobes. There are no markings on the rear face of those cams, at least the ones I have anyway. I think RangeRover's "cam-doctor" post might be the way to go. That way you'll know what you have and won't have to worry about finding it in any book.

the car owner/driver had an engine built. i came in and fixxed the supenion, which allowed for better handlin and more gas. the cam walked, problems! the engine rebuilder would never tell us about the cam. after i pulled it out it was marked the same way. it seems that builders have secarts too.

we run street stocks. man the engine had a snap to it! take it to a cam shope and have it spec'ed

Grab a mike, measure a lobe sideways, then measure height of lobe, subtract the difference, multiply by 1.52= lift. Example- Lobe measured sideways=.700"/Lobe measured overall height=1.000"/Subtract .700" from 1.00"=.300"/.300" x 1.52(rocker ratio)=.456(advertised lift). Sorry, can't help w/ duration.
