What actually controls side clearance on a SBC? I need less clearance, mine is about.035

Side clearance is based on the thickness of the rod ends where they run beside ea other.
As they wear the clearance increases.

Sounds like you need new rods. I don't know that there is any reliable way of fixing it otherwise.

CHECK CRANKSHAFT FOR WEAR OR POOR WORKMANSHIP CHEAP CRANKS SOMETIMES HAVE POOR TOLERANCES

SBC rods are generally .942 to .945 wide on big end. I'd say you're cranks ground to wide.

Sounds like my crank may have been ground wrong. rods measure fine.
