I am building a 406 cast crank 5.7 stock rods and trying to turn the motor between 6000 to 7000 . My ? is the side clearance on the rods, what should it be? right now it is 10 thousands is that ok ,

I know crower likes to see .016 on the side clearance.......I don't think I would put it together with .010 I would put them on a belt sander and lightly press down......

I know some have more luck than others, but I have to say that from what I've seen a stock crank and rods 400 chevy small block doesn't like going over 6000 rpms all that much, no matter how much side clearance it has.

thanks for the info. as far the 406 goes I was building it because the track is hooked up most of the time and fast. There is a 500.00 claim and I thought the cubes would help . I was thinking it was going to be turning 6500 to 7000 but I want it to last at least 10 to 12 races.Has any one had luck with this combo or would I be better off with a 383 or 377? I have never run a 406 or a 377.

We run a 406 with a stock crank and reworked stock rods and turn 6800 to 7000 every friday and Saturday night with no problems. Now this is on a 1/4 mile track where you are only at max RPM for an instant. I know guys running them up to 7500 with no problems. We do however freshen our motor at mid season. and change the oil very frequently.
