I put my 350 starter on my 406 and the starter gear doesn't reach out far enough to turn the ring gear.

What gives?

I have a balance plate between the flywheel and crank. Do I need a special starter? Do 400's and 350's have different starters?

Thanks

they take the same starter #3510
Some have a different head on them, they make a stagger bolt and a cross bolt ones I use one out of a 95 GMC 454 .It's a mini starter.

they should take the same starter are you sure your plate shouldn't be on the outside if the flywheel ?

I had the same problem with a 406 and a balance plate. Had to lose the balance plate and have the machine shop external balance the flywheel. Works good now.

Problem solved. That derned old balance plate was causing problems. Either in front or behind the flywheel, it still caused problems.

Moral of the story - If you run a 406, use a 400 flywheel. The balance plate sux, but I got to give Jr Motorsports a thumbs up. They're sending a 406 flywheel for free.

Thanks for the input.
