What year is it that the Corvette came with a short aluminum water pump?

We went to O'Reilly Auto Parts, and got one off of a 72 Vette I think it was. It wasnt aluminum, but it works fine...2 years on it

chevy # 14011012 ($100 from Jim Pace Pontiac seems to be the best price) is a short alum pump that is a (nearly) direct replacement for the early corvettes (72 and earlier?). As far as I can tell there was never a factory installed alum pump on the early cars, but this Bowtie piece (with GM cast on it) fits nicely. The only potential problem with running it is it has a 3/4" shaft (instead of 5/8") and the body sticks out slightly farther (1/8"?) so you will have to shim your pulleys a little differently.

...Also there is a tell-tale AFI casting mark (Alum. Foundry .?.. logo) that should probably be ground off to complete the stock appearance.

On a side note, I have seen some of the less expensive aftermarket alum pumps(from speedway, etc.) that look very simular but have an end-mill mark where the GM logo would be (probably made at the same foundry).
Good Luck

I'm really wanting the aluminum version. If I remember right, it's around '84.

I may be wrong on this, but I believe that the pump you are thinking of is a reverse flow model. You may be able to change the impeller (sp), but the #14011012 short aluminum pump(Bowtie part, first made available in 1980 I believe) should work fine.

I just got my new Pace Performance catalog and they show 3 GM aluminum water pumps for Gen I small blocks (all but Gen II LT1/LT4).

#12495826 long pump (came on ZZ430 crate motor) $162

#14011012 short pump $100

#12497986 reverse rotation (not clear if it's long or short) $139.59

you can find all of their stuff at wwwpaceparts.com
