hey guys I just got through with my engine and we fired her off. i am getting 60lbs idling and as much as 100 LBs when i rev her up to 4 or 5000 in the shop. My qustion is do I need to go back and remove the high pressure spring from the pump(high volume too) ? i have restrictors in the bock and this is on straight 40 oil although i will be running shaffer 40 wt racing oil when I race. THis is a 350 with a race turned 20/20 crank and i put standard clevites bak in it. I am not worried about loss of horsepower,,, only durabilty (in other words is she going to break a oil pump shaft or anything). THanx J-2 JDukes

I definately would remove the high pressure spring. You should only run a high volume, regular pressure type oil pump. You only need between 40 - 60 lbs. of pressure at your racing RPM.

So you are saying it will grenade my engine?

THE HIGH PRESSURE WILL NOT REALLY GRENADE THE ENGINE BUT WILL SUCK ALL THE OIL OUT OF THE PAN TO KEEP THAT PRESSURE. ALSO HIGHER PRESSURE TAKES ALOT OF HORSEPOWER. CIRCLE TRAXK OR STOCK CAR DID AN ARTICLE ON THIS SAME THING A MONTH AGO, SORRY CAN NOT FIND ISSUE RIGHT NOW TO BE SURE WHICH ONE.

I put the restrictors in and an 8 qt kickout pan in to take care of the running out of oil issue. another question now is if I take the spring out do I need to go back and pull the restrictors(the two at the rear of the cam)

We have had a lot of luck with our engines running a stock volume pump with a high pressure spring. My engine builder say`s the large impeler in the high volume pump is what uses up H/P and could suck all the oil out of the pan .Just my two cents good luck!

Thanks but answer this ---1 if I pull 90 lbs of oil pressure down the straight away will this cause my engine to have problems.---2 if I pull the spring out and just run it as a high volume do I need to pull the restrictors out also. thanks.

90 lbs is this at the shop or after the engine has heated up and have made some laps? why i`m asking is my car holds about 70 cold after heating it up it drops to about 40 to 50 at idle . I don`t think u will hurt the engine. What kind or rpm will you be running? as far as the restrictors leave them in. I run them but i do drill them to .090 i think they are .060 stock.

This was in the shop first 30 minutes of life. I had her opened up to about 2000 so I wouldn't flatted the cam. she was at about 80lbs when she got good and warm. Question wOULD IT BE SAFE FOR ME TO TAKE HER TO PLAY DAY AND SEE HOW SHE DOES ON THE TRACK OR AM I PLAYING WITH FIRE HERE?

you should be ok. over time may wear the cam and dist. gears. if solid cam, leave restrictos in. you don't need that much oil on top.

Thanks for the reply guys I am going to leave it alone and take her to play day. And realley watch the oil on top of the heads. I ran the lash in and cranked it with the covers off it didn't soak me down so we'll see. J-2 JDukes
