I was wondering How come I have never Heard or seen anyone using 1003 Head Gaskets for 400 C.I. motors according to specs. the bore size is plenty big for a .030 bore 400 motor which would produce 4.155 and the 1003 Head Gaskets specs are 4.166 bore and the 1004 are a little bit bigger than this.
So my ? is how come no one is using the 1003 or 1004 head gaskets for the 400 ci motors to increase their compression.
It would seem to me that the tighter you have the gasket around somthing (say a cyclinder bore) the better sealing properties
it would have also.
Any comments are welcome and thanks to who all respond.

I think what you'll find is , that with only a 4.166" fire ring diameter , if there is any variation in bore centerline , or dowel pin placement , you'll have part of the fire ring hanging in the bore . Also , getting high compression ratio on a 400 is not a problem , so gasket diameter and thickness is not as important as with a smaller cubic inch motor .

Ok, I understand what saying about the 400 ci motors but how come they don't make gaskest to fit the boresize for the 350 block motors, like for example if you had a .030 350 block motor, why not have a gasket that is 4.035, or 4.040, to get a tighter seal, and more compression. Instead of having a gasket that is .130 off the bore that really is quite a bit.
Thanks for any info on this subject.

They do Ferrea part # G50021 4.065 bore x .035 thick we use them all the time.anything smaller may be a problem in a block that hasn't had the bore centerlines corrected.its better to be a little large than to have the gasket hang in the bore.

Thanks Steve, I didn't know that ferrea made head gaskets, I was going by what fel-pro and Mr. gasket head gaskets had availible I will try this ferrea head and see how I like it, I think this is a better way to go rather than have a .100 + bore size.

Also, Felpro makes a 1043 head gasket with a bore of 4.080. I use it on my 350 blocks.
