does anyone have any thoughts on this combo?several years ago we did this twice, most torque we've ever had,won 5 races.problem was they didn't live long.first one 10 nights,2nd 2 nights.we used the old ohio 13.5-1 5.7 rod pistons on stock 400 rods, stock crank.to the best of my knowledge the builder never balanced them, hindsight being 20/20 now i know they should have been.what are your views on this combo with beter parts? thanks for your time and thoughts.

i've always been told that the stock 400
rod is too short for racing. the rod to
stroke ratio makes it try to push the
piston out the side of the block .
it might be okay for low RPM and or low
compression. you be better off with at
least a 5.7 rod . this info is from the
"Best **** Garage in Town" owner ,the late
Smokey Unich.

wingnut what actually broke on your 2 engines if you can tell me i can help, im also not to fond of ohio pistons (heavy) i doubt if balance had any thing to do with failure unless your cranks snapped in 2. Ive seen worse rod ratio combos than that which live look at ford 302 it is not a good combo in stock form but can get the job done ive seen it happen. my 2cts thanx

i'm almost sure that it was the piston that broke on the one that ran 10 nights, but the 2 nighter i would't have any idea.the old ohio pistons at that time were better than hy-dutys,but like you said real heavy.we've never run one since, heck even 10 nights isn't real good, but man did they have torque.i have no idea why .

dont give up on it man i built one of those once for a friend in our prostock class here and he had good luck won some races too! we did it because it wascheap and easy at the time and stumbled into something good i geuss used KB pistons and never balanced lot of good nites out of it some brands of pistons tend to hit the skirt on counter throw on way down check for clearance there maybe thats what you had going on?

A long rod 383 is the only way to go. I think anybody that uses a 400 rod is just trying to get buy cheap by using a 350 piston. Can't blame ya for trying it tho.

I guess that true I've heard that long rods are lazy off the corner. How long is a ford rod anyway? All I know is some guys use
300-6 rods in chevy cause they are around 6 inches.there you learned all I know about FORDS.
