Felpro lists a 1043 head gasket that is small bore 4.080 for an aluminum head. I've heard this gasket can be used with L31 Vortec heads (cast-iron). Anybody know for sure?

I don't recall for SURE........but what I do know is most gaskets that are built for auluminum heads have the fire ring compressed already.............this is to prevent the gasket from scratching up the soft aluminum head while torqueing the head down......if the fire ring wasn't compressed already it could mark the head creating a spot for the gasket to burn through.

To answer the question, yes you can use the gasket on a steel head. As you torque the head you will not feel the crush of the gasket that you normally would......the problem is useing a gasket made for a steel head on a aluminum head.......a ton of people run the standard gasket with a aluminum head then when they have a problem they don't understand why.

That is the big difference from a gasket for aluminum to steel head.......I also believe the 1034 is a few thousands thinner or thicker.........I don't remember.....a 1003 is .041 and a 1034 is .038 or visa-versa?

another thing is some aluminum head gaskets the fire ring is made from different metal than for the steel head gaskets......they are softer.......again for the same reasons.

Life spanof the head gaskets on aluminum head motors is less...
with a aluminum head I look at changing gaskets after 10-12 nights depending on rpm range,heating, and compression. This is maintenance, just like changing oil.

Thanks for the response Jeff. I always wondered why they listed different head gaskets for aluminum heads.

I did hear back from a tech at Scoggin-Dickey that the 1043 can be used on 350 blocks with the castiron Vortec heads.

The 1043 is only .039 thick, plus with the 4.080 bore. A little extra compression for my motor and a little tighter quench, just by using a different pair of head gaskets. I usually use the 1003s, but ran across this small bore one in a catalog. Think I'll give them a try next year!
