I was told by several different people that you only need about 28 to 30 degree's.

whel ,

Your ignition timing will depend upon what type of head you are using , combustion chamber design , domed piston vs flat top , etc. etc .
Most 23deg. head engines will run best with 36deg of advance , alky or gas . But you should find someone with an engine dyno or chassis dyno to confirm the best ignition timing for your engine .
What type of head are you using ?

whel ,

I've built many engines using this head . I'm assuming they are Iron Eagle's . You will produce your best power with 36deg. of timing . Do not go above 36 , unless your have your engine on an engine dyno or chassis dyno . Usually if you go with anything less than 36 , you will be costing yourself some power . Hope this helps you out !
