What generally causes carb floats to become crushed?

Hi Sidebite. I ***ume you are talking br*** floats. Since these are sealed units, the only thing I can think of that would cause them to crush is excess float bowl pressure. You may want to make sure your bowl vents are clear. Keep in mind that some air cleaner lids do not provide adequate clearance above the bowl vent tubes. This is most prevalent on Holleys.

Had a pro. carb man tell me that if you rev. the engine with the air breather off and happen to stop the air vent with your hand or something it will pressure up and crush float.

Holley has road course floats that are available. Thats all I ever run (gas) and have never had a problem.

The source of crushed floats is backfire. The sudden pressure rise will usually rupture the power valve first then, if it's severe enough, will colapse the floats. The fact that the bowls are vented to the atmosphere often doesn't help. The pressure rise is so fast that the damage is done before the pressure can equalize.

You can always use the nitrophyl (black) floats but that won't help the power valve. A better idea is to use the spring/checkball deal that Holley sells that prevents the pressure rise from reaching the fuel bowl in the first place.
