ARP EARNS THE HARDEE'S SHOOTOUT POLE AND PEARSON WINS THE ISKY DASH
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
WOODSTOCK, GA - Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN earned the pole position on
Friday night for the $55,000-to-win 13th Annual Hardee's Shootout for the
United Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series on Saturday night
Dixie Speedway. Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL picked up the $5,000
top prize on Friday night by winning the 20-lap Isky Dash.
Arp, who finished second the July Dixie Speedway UDTRA event, won the first
15-lap heat race in the Charter Communications/Crown Fiber GRT/Gaerte Grand
Prix to earn the inside front row starting spot for the Hardee's Shootout.
Defending and two-time Hardee's Shootout Champion Dale McDowell of
Rossville, GA won the second heat race and will start the Larry Shaw Race
Cars Rocket by Shaw/Custom Grand Prix in the Hardee's Shootout on the
outside of row one. The 1999 UDTRA Champion also picked up the JE Pistons
Bonus Award of $400 with the heat race win.
Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL won the third heat in the Car City Company
Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo for the inside second row starting spot in
Shootout. The outside second row starting spot went to fourth heat race
winner Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV in the Richard Construction
Rocket/Malcuit Monte Carlo.
Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC took the fifth heat race win and the Scott
Performance Wire $50 Bonus Award to earn the inside third row starting
position in the Biscotti's Restaurant and Winery/Park Ohio Rocket/Draime
Monte Carlo. Pearson drove the Lucas Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon
Taurus to the sixth heat race win and will start the Shootout from outside
"Everything is looking good because we've won our heat and the Isky Dash
our sponsor Lucas Oil," Pearson said. "We've got a good car and I just hope
we can keep it going into tomorrow night."
In the Isky Dash, Pearson moved up from the third starting spot and
challenged race leader Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI side-by-side early and
often. Mars was running the outside groove in his Jimmy Mars Racing
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo, while Pearson dug in on the inside of
track. Pearson got the better bite coming off the fourth turn on lap 13
take the lead.
Pearson then pulled away for the win in the caution-free race followed by
Mars, McDowell, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY in the Valvoline/Mopar Parts
Rocket/Stanton Intrepid, and Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA in the
Daufeldt Transport Mastersbilt/Pro Power Grand Prix.
Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC took the sixth spot in the Youngblood Concrete
Mastersbilt/Cornett Taurus, and two-time UDTRA Champion Rick Eckert of York,
PA charged from the 14th and last starting spot by virtue of the draw to
finish seventh in the Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett Taurus.
The 1997 Shootout winner and UDTRA Champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR
came from 12th to finish eighth in the Petroff Towing/J&J Steel
Mastersbilt/Dickens Taurus. Scott Sexton of Pigeon Forge, TN was ninth in
the D&S Builders Mastersbilt/Custom Grand Prix and Marshall Green of Dalton,
GA rounded out the top ten in Clint Smith's JP Drilling GRT/Race Tech Monte
In front of what track officials said was the largest Friday night Shootout
crowd, the six heat races saw two and three-wide racing. The top three
finishers in each heat transferred into the "Elite 18" for the Hardee's
Shootout filling in the first nine rows of the starting line-up.
Drivers finishing fourth on back in the heats will return early tomorrow
night to try again in the two Polaris ATVs Consolation Races that will
transfer the first three finishers in each race into the Hardee's Shootout.
Several drivers in the UDTRA top ten in points will be in one of those
consys on Saturday night.
Eckert started out the evening in grand style by turning in fast time honors
among the 62 entrants by turning the 3/8-mile clay oval in 15.501 seconds
for an average speed of 93.097 miles per hour. That earned the 2001-2002
UDTRA Champion the pole position in the first heat. In just a few minutes
time, Eckert went from the penthouse to the outhouse.
Eckert started falling back through the field at the drop of the green flag,
and in just a couple of laps, Eckert was running back in the sixth spot.
lap four, Eckert spun in turn two and then went to the pit area. By being
the point leader, Eckert is the first driver eligible for a UDTRA
Provisional should he fail to transfer through his consy.
During the caution flag for Eckert's spin, race leader Freddy Smith of
Knoxville, TN lost the oil pressure in his Christenberry Trucking and Farms
Warrior/Gaerte Monte Carlo, and the 1996 UDTRA Champion retired for the
evening. Smith is sixth in UDTRA points, and will probably have to hope
Mars to transfer through the Consy to take a Provisional to make the
Shootout if he can't transfer through his consy.
Arp then assumed the lead to win the first heat and earn the pole for the
Shootout. Chub Frank of Sugar Grove, PA finished second in the Corry Rubber
Rocket/Draime Monte Carlo, and the third and final transfer spot when to
John Gill of Mitchell, IN in the Helena Rocket/Draime Grand Prix.
Following McDowell across the stripe in the second heat were Moyer and
Birkhofer. Babb led 2002 Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year Billy Ogle Jr. of
Knoxville, TN in the Calhoun's Restaurant GRT/Clements Monte Carlo and
Patrick Duggan of Lenoir City, TN in the D&R Construction GRT/B&B Grand Prix
in the third heat.
Transferring into the Hardee's Shootout along with Shaver in the fourth heat
were 1996 Shootout winner Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR in the JFR
Graphics/Monday Motorsports GRT/Gaerte Grand Prix and Lamar Haygood of
Douglasville, GA in the ABS Automotive Rocket/Bishop Grand Prix.
Chupp led Francis, and Bobby Turner of Ballground, GA in the Milwood
Plumbing Rocket/Draime Monte Carlo under the checkered flag in the fifth
heat. Joining Pearson as Shootout transferees in the sixth heat were 1995
Shootout winner Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR in the Petroff Towing GRT/Kuntz
Taurus and Rex Richey of Ringgold, GA in the Underground Plumbing and
Service Rocket/Race Tech Monte Carlo.
On Saturday, the grandstand gates will open at 2 p.m., and fans will be
greeted by a live band. The Dirt Racing Outreach will be holding a church
service just outside the pit gate at 4 p.m. There will be a UDTRA Drivers
Autograph Session on Souvenir Row at 5 p.m.
The pre-race ceremonies are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. followed by hot laps
the cars competing in the two Polaris ATVs Consolation Races. This will
the last opportunity for drivers to transfer into the starting line-up for
the $55,000-to-win, $2,500-to-start Hardee's Shootout.
In addition to the UDTRA Pro DirtCars, the Dixie Speedway A and B Sportsman
cars will also be in action on Saturday night with Championship Races. For
race day, ticket hotel and camping information call Dixie Speedway at (770)
926-5315, or visit their web site at www.dixiespeedway.com. Dixie Speedway
is located one-mile west of I-575 on Highway 92.
