ARP SKIPS FROM 18TH TO 1ST IN ATOMIC FOOD CITY 100
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
KNOXVILLE, TN - Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN ended a four-year winless dry
spell in United Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series competition
on Sunday night by racing from the 18th starting position to win the Food
City 100 at Atomic Motor Speedway. Arp took the lead on lap 56 and never
looked back to post the $20,000 victory in front of a packed house.
The win was the 13th career UDTRA victory for Arp, and his first since
August 15, 1998 in Pittsburgh, PA. Arp said his new Charter
Communications/Crown Fiber GRT/Gaerte Grand Prix was the key to his success
that also earned him the $150 Advance Auto Parts Hard Charger of the Race
Award, and the win in the second 15-lap Polaris ATVs Consolation Race.
"This is a brand new car, and I think it was the best car I've ever had
here at Atomic," Arp said. "We went back to the old style GRT front end,
and that's made a big difference, plus our Gaerte engine gave us all of the
power we needed. We didn't do too well in qualifying or the heat race last
night, so we made a couple of changes for today, won the consy, and picked
the right tires for the feature."
Four-time UDTRA Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN led for three
laps, but had to settle for second in the Miller Brothers Coal
Warrior/Custom Taurus after an exciting side-by-side duel with Duayne Hommel
of Newport, TN. Hommel finished third in the Stowers CAT Rentals
Warrior/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
The top three in the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series point standings finished
fourth through sixth respectively.
Defending UDTRA Champion and current point leader Rick Eckert of York, PA
took the fourth spot in the Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett Taurus, 1999 UDTRA
Champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA finished fifth in the Larry Shaw
Race Cars Rocket by Shaw/Custom Grand Prix, and Steve Francis of Ashland,
was sixth in the Valvoline/Mopar Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid.
Eckert now holds a 131-point lead over McDowell, with Francis in third spot,
178 points behind Eckert.
Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN finished seventh in the Stealth Racing
Carburetors Mastersbilt/Race Tech Grand Prix. Rex Richey of Ringgold, GA
was eighth in the Underground Plumbing & Service Rocket/Race Tech Monte
Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC took the ninth spot in the Biscotti's
Restaurant and Winery/Park Ohio Rocket/Draime Grand Prix, and Jimmy Mars
Elk Mound, WI rounded out the top ten in the Jimmy Mars Racing
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
Hommel grabbed the lead from his outside front row starting spot at the
start of the race, while pole sitter Eckert battled side-by-side with
Bloomquist for the second spot on the first lap. Bloomquist beat Eckert
the second turn on the second lap to take the second spot.
The top five cars settled in by lap three with Hommel leading Bloomquist,
Eckert, McDowell, and Scott Sexton of Pigeon Forge, TN in the Quality Heat
and Air Mastersbilt/Custom Grand Prix. Bloomquist began looking to the
inside of Hommel on lap nine, as the lead duo had pulled out to a
half-straightaway lead over Eckert.
The leaders began to lap the cars at the tail of the field by lap 14, and
Hommel was able to pull away from Bloomquist by lap 18. At the 25-lap mark,
it was Hommel, Bloomquist, Eckert, Sexton, McDowell, Francis, Mars, and Arp,
who had moved up to the eighth spot. Johnson rode in ninth, with Chupp in
Arp had moved up to sixth spot by lap 30, and it was clear the 1998 UDTRA
championship runner-up and former Atomic Motor Speedway Late Model Champion
was on a mission. Arp pulled into the top five by lap 33. Sexton was also
on the move, as he passed Eckert for the third spot on lap 36, and Arp got
by Eckert for fourth on lap 37.
Bloomquist had caught Hommel in lapped traffic on lap 38, and was once again
beginning to look inside to challenge for the lead. On lap 40, Hommel and
Bloomquist ran side-by-side, and Bloomquist took the lead at the flagstand.
That move was negated, however, when 1996 UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith of
Knoxville, TN stalled on the backstretch. The field was lined up for the
restart the way they were running on lap 39, which was the last completed
lap before the caution. During the caution period, Sexton gave up the third
spot when he went to the pits, and his crew began working on the front of
Sexton returned to the track minus the front nose piece of his car, and
lined up as the last car on the lead lap. Hommel led Bloomquist, Arp,
Eckert, McDowell, Francis, Mars, Chupp, Johnson, and Mark Douglas of
Knoxville, TN in the Smoothcut Lawn Care GRT/Vic Hill Grand Prix back to
Arp began to look to the inside of Bloomquist on the restart, and top three
cars led by Hommel pulled out to a full straightaway lead over Eckert by
50. After the halfway point in the race, business began to pick up at the
front of the pack as Bloomquist drove past Hommel in turn one to take the
lead on lap 53, and brought Arp with him.
Arp pulled along side Bloomquist to challenge for the point on lap 55 in
heavy lapped traffic. Shane Tankersley of Morganton, GA was running the
inside groove in his Tankersley Motorsports Rocket/Custom Grand Prix, and
Randy Korte of Highland, IL was working the outside groove in the
Mid-Continental Fuels Rocket by Shaw/Pro Power Grand Prix in front of the
With Arp on the inside, he used Korte as a pick to drive under the outside
running Bloomquist down the backstretch on lap 56 to take the lead. Arp
then began to pull away, and by lap 65, had a half-straightaway lead on
Hommel moved up to challenge to the inside of Bloomquist for the second spot
on lap 67. Hommel and Bloomquist raced back-and-forth swapping the position
for the next 12 laps. Hommel would edge ahead of Bloomquist going into the
turns, but Bloomquist was better coming off the corners.
While Bloomquist and Hommel diced for the second spot, Arp had stretched
lead out to a half lap on the 1/3-mile high-banked clay oval by lap 81.
The second and final caution flag of the race came out on lap 82, and it
almost spelled disaster for Arp. Mars and Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville,
FL in the Lucas Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon Taurus got together in
turn one while battling for the tenth spot. Arp was closing in on the two
cars at the tail of the lead lap, and had to stop to keep from crashing into
Since Arp avoided the crash by stopping, he was put back on the point for
the restart. Mars and Pearson were also able to restart. When the green
flag came back out, Arp quickly pulled away from Bloomquist and Hommel.
Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, TN was the Lucas Oil Rookie of the Race driving
the Calhoun's Restaurant GRT/Clements Monte Carlo. Mark Vineyard of Powell,
TN drove the Smithbuilt Warrior/Vic Hill Monte Carlo to victory in the first
15-lap Polaris ATVs Consolation Race.
On Saturday night, the four 15-lap heat races were won by Eckert, Hommel,
Sexton and Bloomquist. Eckert took the $50 Scott Performance Wire Bonus
Award, and Sexton won the $100 JE Pistons Bonus Award. McDowell was the
fast qualifier among the 45 entrants with a lap in 12.551 seconds for an
average speed of 95.610 miles per hour.
Mark Martin of Baxter, TN driving the Martin Lumber GRT/Performance Monte
Carlo earned a starting spot for the main event with a second-place finish
in the fourth heat race, but he chose not to race on Sunday night due to
dispute with the track management.
The next UDTRA Dirty Thursday will air September 12 at 11 p.m. ET with
action from Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA. For the complete UDTRA SPEED
Channel schedule and a direct feedback link, visit the UDTRA web site at www.udtra.com.
