MOYER MASTERS MIGHTY MACON
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MACON, IL - Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR survived late-race contact with
his teammate, and hometown hero, Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL to go on and
win the Featherlite Trailers 100 on Sunday night for the United Dirt Track
Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series at Macon Speedway.
The 1997 UDTRA Champion collected $10,000 for his 29th UDTRA career win
driving the Petroff Towing/J&J Steel Rayburn/Dickens Taurus.
The contact was not just limited to the leaders, as there was a lot of
slamming and jamming on the tight confines of the 1/5-mile high-banked dirt
oval that sent fans among the packed house scrambling through piles of bent
sheet metal after the race in search of souvenirs. Only eight of the 20
cars that started the race were around at the checkered flag.
Moyer took the lead from Babb on lap 49 and then held off a late race
challenge from Babb in lapped traffic, in which contact between the two
lap 90 resulted in a broken left-front suspension on Babb's Car City Company
Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN lost his power steering at the halfway point
in the race, but manhandled his Petroff Towing Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo
to a second-place finish. Steve Francis of Ashland, KY finished third in
the Valvoline/Mopar Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid, and moved up to second
place in the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series point standings.
Babb was able to carry his injured car home to a fourth-place finish, and
defending UDTRA Champion and current point leader Rick Eckert of York, PA
was fifth in the Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett Taurus, and the final car on the
lead lap. Eckert has a 132-point lead over Francis in the UDTRA points
Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL took the sixth spot in the Lucas
Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon Taurus. Pearson, who started 16th, was
the Advance Auto Parts Hard Charger of the Race. Kerby Damery of Macon,
finished seventh in the RPM GRT/Runyon Grand Prix, and Dennis Erb Jr. of
Carpentersville, IL was eight in the B&K Sportswear Rayburn/Erb Monte Carlo.
Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, TN posted his second top ten finish of the
season with a ninth-place effort in the Calhoun's Restaurant GRT/Clements
Monte Carlo and was the Lucas Oil Rookie of the Race.
Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI ran in the top five for the first three-quarters
of the race, but was involved in a wreck and finished tenth in the Jimmy
Mars Racing Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
Babb took the lead from his outside front row starting spot at the start
the race, beating polesitter Moyer off the second turn, followed by 1999
UDTRA Champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA in the Larry Shaw Race Cars
Rocket/Custom Grand Prix, Randy Korte of Highland, IL in the Mid Continental
Fuel Rocket by Shaw/Pro Power Monte Carlo, and Eckert.
The contact came early and often in the race, as Justin Allgaier of
Riverton, IL brought out the first of nine caution flags on lap three when
he crashed his Hoosier Tire Midwest Rayburn/Rhyne Monte Carlo on the
backstretch. On the restart, Korte and Eckert shot under McDowell for the
third and fourth spots respectively. Korte dropped out with damage to his
car on lap 32.
Debris on the front straightaway brought out the second yellow flag on lap
39. Babb led the field down for the restart followed by Moyer, Eckert,
O'Neal, McDowell, Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, IL in the C.J. Rayburn Race
Cars Rayburn/Hixon Monte Carlo, Francis, Mars, and Erb. The top nine cars
were the only cars on the lead lap. Erb went to the infield on lap 40.
Moyer looked to the inside to challenge Babb for the point on the restart,
but the paced was slowed for a third time on lap 44 when the tenth-place
Jayco Construction GRT/Walters Monte Carlo of Chatham, IL's Brian Shirley
spun in turn three. On the restart, Francis went to the outside to pass
Weaver and McDowell to move up to the fifth spot, and Erb rejoined the race
two laps down.
On lap 48, contact sent McDowell spinning off the fourth turn, and through
the small infield to the backstretch to bring out the fourth caution flag.
Weaver spun on the restart for the fifth yellow flag of the race.
Moyer again went to the inside of Babb on the restart, and the two raced
side-by-side for two laps before Moyer grabbed the point coming off the
second turn on lap 49.
O'Neal passed Eckert for the third spot on lap 51, but the battle for the
sixth spot came to a grinding halt on lap 52 when McDowell and Mars crashed
in turn four to bring out the sixth caution flag. McDowell retired for
night with damage to his car, but Mars was able to continue on the tail
the lead lap for the restart in the sixth position.
The 1996 UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN lost the driveshaft
under his Christenberry Trucking and Farms Warrior/Custom Monte Carlo on
58 for the seventh caution flag. Following Moyer down for the restart were
Babb, O'Neal, Eckert, Mars and Francis.
The yellow flag came out for the eighth time when Jason Fegers of
Bloomington, IL stalled his Griffin Design Mastersbilt/Rhyne Grand Prix
turn two while running in the seventh spot. After the restart, Mars got
Eckert for the fourth spot on lap 75, and Babb, who tried the inside line
the track for a few laps, went back upstairs, scraping the walls, in pursuit
Mars dropped out of the race on lap 86, and Moyer began to close in on the
lapped cars of Ogle and Erb on lap 87. Moyer was able to work underneath
Erb, but Ogle was running in the same groove Moyer wanted to run in. Babb
was reeling in Moyer when the leaders led by the lapped car of Ogle entered
turn three on lap 90.
Moyer punted Ogle, who spun in turn four. Moyer took evasive action to
outside to keep from crashing into Ogle, but instead collided with the
left-front corner of Babb's car. Ogle slid to stop to bring out the ninth,
and final caution flag. The contact left Babb's left front wheel askew,
he kept rolling, and lined up for the restart behind Moyer.
Moyer took off unchallenged for the 11-lap dash to the finish, and Babb
able to hold on to the second spot for four laps before O'Neal passed him
lap 93. Francis moved around Babb for the third spot on lap 99.
The win gave Moyer a clean sweep of the evening's racing program. Moyer
the fast qualifier among the 35 entrants with a lap in 11.016 seconds for
average speed of 65.359 miles per hour. Moyer also won the first 12-lap
heat to earn the pole position, and Babb won the second heat for the outside
front row starting spot.
McDowell picked up the Scott Performance Wire $50 Bonus Award with a third
heat race win. Francis took the fourth heat race and the $100 JE Pistons
Bonus Award. Shirley and Pearson won the two 12-lap Polaris ATVs
