McDOWELL TAKES THE SCENIC ROUTE TO SECOND UDTRA WIN OF THE SEASON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ONEIDA, TN -The 1999 United Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar
Series Champion and current point leader Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA
raced to his second win of the season Friday night in the Jim Barna Log
Systems 50 at Scenic Raceway.

McDowell was never challenged and led wire-to-wire driving the Larry Shaw
Race Cars Rocket/Custom Grand Prix to post the $10,000 victory.

"This is our first time here, and I really like this place," McDowell said.
"Everything went really smooth tonight, and the only close calls I had were
in lapped traffic. This is a fast race track, and you come up on the lapped
car pretty quick."

McDowell might have been the only car in the race that wasn't involved
in a
battle for position. Behind him, there were wholesale position changes.

Steve Francis of Ashland, KY brought the Valvoline/Mopar Parts
Rocket/Stanton Intrepid home in the second spot after a race-long duel with
Defending UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series Champion Rick Eckert of York, PA, who
settled for the third spot in the Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett Taurus.

Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI rolled the Jimmy Mars Racing Mastersbilt/Pro
Power Monte Carlo to his fifth-straight top five finish with a fourth-place
effort. Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI was fifth in the Pro Power Racing
Engines GRT/Pro Power Monte Carlo.

McDowell extended his point lead over Eckert to 26 points. Mars is in the
third spot in the points chase, nine points behind Eckert, and Francis
closed to within two points of Mars in the fourth spot in the UDTRA point
standings.

Earl Pearson Jr. put on a late-race rally to finish sixth in the Lucas
Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon Taurus. Steve Shaver of Parkersburg,
WV
was the Advance Auto Parts Hard Charger of the Race after starting the
Richard Construction Rocket/Malcuit Monte Carlo in the 20th spot and
finishing seventh.

Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC took the eighth spot driving the Youngblood
Concrete Mastersbilt/Cornett Taurus, and four-time UDTRA Champion Scott
Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN was ninth in the Miller Brothers Coal
Warrior/Custom Taurus. Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL rounded out the top
ten
in the Car City Co. Rayburn/Dickens Taurus.

At the drop of the green flag, McDowell bolted from his outside front row
starting spot to beat polesitter Rick Eckert into the first corner followed
by Mars, Francis, and Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC in the Biscotti's
Restaurant and Winery/Park Ohio Rocket/Draime Grand Prix.

The first of three caution flags was unfurled on lap three when Terry
Shannon of Pilot Mountain, TN stalled the P&J Builders Warrior/Custom Monte
Carlo in turn one. With the event being taped for airing on the SPEED
Channel on May 23 at 11 p.m. ET, the restart was double-file behind
McDowell.

Just after the restart, Chupp slowed on the frontstretch to bring out the
second caution flag. Cook moved into the top five for the restart behind
McDowell, Eckert, Mars, and Francis, with Bloomquist, Schlieper, Billy Ogle
Jr. of Knoxville, TN, 1996 UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN
and
Babb sixth through tenth respectively.

Mars drove around the outside of Eckert for the second spot on the restart,
while Smith used the outside groove to work around Ogle and Bloomquist.
As
Smith tried to clear Bloomquist down the backstretch, the two cars made
contact, sending Smith sliding sideways.

In what looked like was going to be a wild ride for the Southern Gentleman,
Smith did a miraculous job of saving the car at over 100 miles per hour,
and
only lost one position after catching his Christenberry Trucking and Farms
Warrior/Custom Monte Carlo on the inside groove of the backstretch.

The third caution flag was brought out on lap six when Randy Korte of
Highland, IL hit an inside tire barrier with his Mid-Continental Fuels
Rocket/Pro Power Monte Carlo and spun in turn four.

Anthony While of Clinton, TN in the Stone Plus Warrior/Vic Hill Grand Prix
also hit the tire that was thrown on the track by Korte, and both cars were
out of the race. Smith also pitted during the caution flag with a bent
rear
suspension, but returned for the restart.

Another double-file restart had McDowell the leader followed by Mars, with
Eckert to his outside. Francis had the inside groove in the fourth spot,
and Schlieper moved up to fifth on the outside. On the restart, Eckert
and
Francis dove underneath Mars, who jumped the cushion in turn two, to drop
him back to the fourth spot.

Bloomquist moved up to battle Cook for the sixth spot on lap seven, and
by
the eighth lap, Francis and Eckert were also going at it side-by-side for
second. Pearson and Shaver drove into the top ten by lap 15, running eighth
and ninth respectively. Cook and Bloomquist swapped the sixth spot back
and
forth several times for five laps.

At the halfway point, it was McDowell by ten car-lengths over Eckert,
Francis, Mars, Schlieper, Cook, Bloomquist, Pearson, Shaver, and Babb.
Francis went from the inside to the outside on lap 29 in an effort to pass
Eckert for second. Francis made the outside work on lap 33, as he drove
around Eckert for the second spot in turn three.

Francis then tried to chase down McDowell, but hit the wall coming off the
second turn on lap 41. The Kentucky Colonel hung on to the second spot,
but
Eckert was able to close in for another shot to reclaim the second position.
Pearson was on the move in the closing laps, passing Bloomquist for seventh
on lap 43, and then getting Cook for sixth on lap 47.

Bloomquist got loose in turn two on lap 43, which brought Shaver into the
eighth spot, and he then followed Pearson around Cook with three laps to
go.

Eckert was the fastest qualifier among the 40 entrants with a lap around
the
1/2-mile high-banked clay oval in 15.845 seconds for an average of 113.601
miles per hour and a new track record. The old track record of 17.023
seconds was topped or equaled by 35 of the 39 cars that completed a
qualification run.

Eckert also won the Cornett Race Engines first 12-lap heat race, and
McDowell claimed the $50 Scott Performance Wire Bonus Award with a second
heat win. Francis just edged Bloomquist in a photo finish to win the third
heat race, and Mars took the $100 JE Pistons Bonus Award with a fourth heat
race win.

Shannon won the first 12-lap Polaris ATVs Consolation Race, and Mark Kraus
of Stratford, WI won the second Polaris ATVs Consolation Race in the Heeg
Well Drilling Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo. Ogle finished 11th in
the
Calhoun's Restaurant GRT/Clements Monte Carlo to earn the Lucas Oil Rookie
of the Race honors.

The UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series will be back in action on May 13 at Kankakee
Speedway in Kankakee, IL for a 50-lap $10,000-to-win main event.
